Delivery of Pleckstrin‐Homology Domains Suppresses PI3K/Akt Signaling and Breast Cancer Metastasis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Current therapies curb tumor growth but not metastasis. Obscurin, a giant metastasis suppressor lost in breast cancer, restrains PI3K/Akt signaling but is impractical to restore. We deploy a mini‐obscurin, comprising the obscurin‐PH‐domain, which sequesters PI3K‐p85, potently suppressing invasion and metastasis.

Muscle Function and Fatigability of Trunk Flexors in Males and Females [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background Optimal function of the abdominal muscles is necessary for several life functions including lifting and carrying tasks. Sex differences in strength and fatigability are established for many limb muscles and back extensor muscles, but it is ...

Proton FLASH Exposure Preserves Gut Commensal Microbiomes and Spares Intestinal Stem Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study highlights the role of Proton FLASH abdominal irradiation in sparing of intestinal stem cells and preservation of key gut microbial population resulting minimization of radiation toxicity in intestinal epithelium in mice. Our findings support the potential of Proton FLASH to improve the therapeutic ratio for abdominal radiation exposure ...

Proteome Expression Signatures: Differences between Orbital and Subcutaneous Abdominal Adipose Tissues

open access: yesLife
Differences between orbital and subcutaneous abdominal fat in the same patient have been noted but not formally investigated, previously. The objective of this research was to compare the differential expression of protein profiles in subcutaneous ...

Thickness of Rectus Abdominis Muscle and Abdominal Subcutaneous Fat Tissue in Adult Women: Correlation with Age, Pregnancy, Laparotomy, and Body Mass Index [PDF]

open access: yesArchives of Plastic Surgery, 2012
BackgroundRectus abdominis muscle and abdominal subcutaneous fat tissue are useful for reconstruction of the chest wall, and abdominal, vaginal, and perianal defects. Thus, preoperative evaluation of rectus abdominis muscle and abdominal subcutaneous fat

The association between cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiometabolic risk in children is mediated by abdominal adiposity: the HAPPY study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: It is unclear whether cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is independently linked to cardiometabolic risk in children. This study investigated a) the association between CRF level and presence of cardiometabolic risk disorders using health ...

Adhesion‐Related Macrophages Regulate Metabolic Homeostasis Through CAV‐1 Dependency

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Adipose tissue harbors a distinct macrophage subpopulation, termed adhesion‐related macrophages (ARMs), which stably adhere to adipocytes. In obesity, ARMs represent the major expanding macrophage subset. They acquire material from adipocytes and rely on Caveolin‐1 for sustained lipid handling.

Hepatocyte BDNF Acts as a Novel Immune Checkpoint to Restrain TLR4‐Mediated Acute Hepatitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies hepatocyte‐derived BDNF as an endogenous TLR4 antagonist that alleviates acute hepatitis. BDNF is downregulated in hepatocytes via REST‐mediated transcriptional repression during ALI/ALF. Mechanistically, BDNF binds to TLR4 on macrophages to suppress inflammation.

Loss of VMP1 Impairs Tight Junction Recycling and Aggravates Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies vacuole membrane protein 1 (VMP1) as a critical regulator of intestinal epithelial barrier homeostasis. VMP1 facilitates the recruitment of CORO1C to late endosomes, supporting Retromer‐mediated recycling of the tight junction protein Occludin.
