Postoperative intra-abdominal sepsis
Abstract Postoperative intra-abdominal sepsis carries a high mortality. Diagnosis by clinical examination is often difficult, and imaging techniques may be helpful. Diagnostic laparotomy should be considered early, even in the absence of localizing signs. The use of aggressive surgical techniques may improve prognosis.

Inflammatory mediators, infection, sepsis, and multiorgan failure after severe trauma [PDF]
The relation of (multiple) organ failure (OF) to the release of inflammatory mediators and the incidence of infection and sepsis was studied prospectively in 100 patients with multiple trauma (injury severity score=37).

Released bacterial ATP shapes local and systemic inflammation during abdominal sepsis. [PDF]
Sepsis causes millions of deaths per year worldwide and is a current global health priority declared by the WHO. Sepsis-related deaths are a result of dysregulated inflammatory immune responses indicating the need to develop strategies to target ...

CR8L10 is self‐assembled with catalase (CAT) to form CR8L10@CAT nanocomplexes, which can anchor to mucosal surfaces via thiol‐disulfide exchange with mucin, thereby enhancing their mucosal retention. The efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging at inflamed sites would then result in successful treatment in both the intravesical IC/BPS model ...

Influence of genetic variations in TLR4 and TIRAP/Mal on the course of sepsis and pneumonia and cytokine release : an observational study in three cohorts [PDF]
Introduction: It has been proposed that individual genetic variation contributes to the course of severe infections and sepsis. Recent studies of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within the endotoxin receptor and its signaling system showed an ...

ABSTRACT Background Surgical site infection (SSI) is a major complication after ileal pouch–anal anastomosis (IPAA) in pediatric ulcerative colitis (UC), significantly impairing quality of life. The lymphocyte‐to–C‐reactive protein ratio (LCR), a composite marker of systemic inflammation and immune/nutritional status, has emerged as a potential ...

Over the edge: Empirical evidence for the cliff‐edge model of obstetric selection
Abstract The cliff‐edge model of obstetric selection maintains that larger neonates and smaller birth canals confer a positive selective advantage until labor becomes obstructed and vaginal delivery is no longer possible, eliciting an abrupt reduction in fitness.
