Grip and Grasp: Lizard Claw Inspired Robotic Manipulators

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Our study identifies the most effective lizard claw shape for use as an end effector in a bioinspired robotic manipulator. By examining key geometric features and combining them into comparative indices, the Crotaphytus collaris claw is found to be the best fit.

Theory formation by abduction : a case study based on the chemical revolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
Abduction is the process of constructing explanations. This chapter suggests that automated abduction is a key to advancing beyond the "routine theory revision" methods developed in early AI research towards automated reasoning systems capable of "world ...

Scientific Realism, Adaptationism and the Problem of the Criterion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Scientific Realism (SR) has three crucial aspects: 1) the centrality of the concept of truth, 2) the idea that success is a reliable indicator of truth, and 3) the idea that the Inference to the Best Explanation is a reliable inference rule.

Wavy‐Interlocked Stretchable Triboelectric Nanogenerators Enhanced by Liquid Metal Microflowers for Self‐Powered Wearable Motion Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Schematic showing a stretchable triboelectric nanogenerator based on interlocked wavy architectures that uses EGaIn microflower‐embedded PVDF‐TrFE and Nylon‐6 nanofiber membranes. The multi‐petaled, electron‐rich EGaIn microflowers enhance interfacial polarization and capacitance, while the interlocked wavy architecture enlarges the effective contact ...

A motion-decomposition approach to address gimbal lock in the 3-cylinder open chain mechanism description of a joint coordinate system at the glenohumeral joint [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In this study, the standard-sequence properties of a joint coordinate system were implemented for the glenohumeral joint by the use of a set of instantaneous geometrical planes.

Association Between Liver Function Grade and Post‐Hepatectomy Liver Failure in Patients With Hepatocellular Carcinoma: A Latent Class Analysis

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
We retrospectively analyzed clinical data from patients who underwent hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using LCA‐based grading system. These findings provide a new risk stratification framework for the design of precision surgery to treat patients with HCC.

Abduction-Based Explanations for Machine Learning Models

open access: yes, 2018
The growing range of applications of Machine Learning (ML) in a multitude of settings motivates the ability of computing small explanations for predictions made. Small explanations are generally accepted as easier for human decision makers to understand.
