The Urbach tail in silica glass from first principles
We present density-functional theory calculations of the optical absorption spectra of silica glass for temperatures up to 2400 K. The calculated spectra exhibit exponential tails near the fundamental absorption edge that follow the Urbach rule, in good ...

This study investigates an alternative approach to reactivating the oncosuppressor p53 in cancer. A short peptide targeting the association of the two p53 inhibitors, MDM2 and MDM4, induces an otherwise therapeutically active p53 with unique features that promote cell death and potentially reduce toxicity towards proliferating nontumor cells.

Self‐Healing Hydrogels: The Next Paradigm Shift in Tissue Engineering?
Given their durability and long‐term stability, self‐healable hydrogels have, in the past few years, emerged as promising replacements for the many brittle hydrogels currently being used in preclinical or clinical trials. To this end, the incompatibility

Development of biodegradable composite micro-perforated panel made from natural fibre composites with evaluation of its acoustic and mechanical properties [PDF]
Micro-perforated panel (MPP) has been widely considered as a promising alternative for sound absorption purposes. Plenty of research has been done to improve the sound absorption of MPP but no specific work highlights the material structure effect ...

We identified adaptor protein ShcD as upregulated in triple‐negative breast cancer and found its expression to be correlated with reduced patient survival and increased invasion in cell models. Using a proteomic screen, we identified novel ShcD binding partners involved in EGFR signaling pathways.

Autumn and Winter Anomalies in Ionospheric Absorption as Measured by Riometers [PDF]
Seasonal variations of ionospheric absorption were studied using riometer (A2) measurements over a wide latitude range. In agreement with the results of earlier studies of A1 radiowave absorption, equinoctial maxima of approximately equal amplitude are ...

Loss of proton‐sensing GPR4 reduces tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer
G protein‐coupled receptor 4 (GPR4) is a pH‐sensing receptor activated by acidic pH. GPR4 expression is increased in patients with inflammatory bowel disease who are at high risk of developing colorectal cancer. In mouse models, loss of GPR4 attenuated tumor progression. This correlated with increased IL2 and natural killer cell activity.
