Perched on the Plateau: Speciation in a Cape Fold Mountain Velvet Worm Clade, With the Description of Seven New Species (Onychophora: Peripatopsidae: Peripatopsis) From South Africa

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Molecular systematic studies revealed seven novel velvet worm species from the Cape Fold Mountains in the Western Cape, South Africa suggest high levels of endemism for forest‐dwelling species such a velvet worms (Peripatopsis). Photographic images of five of the new species (B‐F). ABSTRACT During the present study, we re‐examined species boundaries in

Quantifying the Dietary Overlap of Two Co‐Occurring Mammal Species Using DNA Metabarcoding to Assess Potential Competition

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 4, April 2025.
Interspecific competition among co‐occurring species with similar resource requirements can be assessed by measuring diet overlap. A study on common brushtail possums and bush rats used DNA metabarcoding of faecal samples to quantify their dietary overlap, finding a significant similarity.

Considerations for drug trials in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, Volume 12, Issue 2, Page 1095-1112, April 2025.
Abstract Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a heterogeneous condition with potentially serious manifestations. Management has traditionally comprised therapies to palliate symptoms and implantable cardioverter‐defibrillators to prevent sudden cardiac death. The need for disease‐modifying therapies has been recognized for decades.

African elephants influence browse availability for black rhinoceroses in Gonarezhou National Park, Zimbabwe

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, Volume 89, Issue 3, April 2025.
This study examined competition for woody browse between elephants and reintroduced black rhinoceroses in Gonarezhou National Park during the 2022 dry season. We found substantial overlap in their feeding areas, plant species selection, and foraging heights, although elephants preferred larger stem diameters.
