Auto-Modernity after Postmodernism: Autonomy and Automation in Culture, Technology, and Education [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Part of the Volume on Digital Young, Innovation, and the UnexpectedThis chapter argues that in order to understand the implications of how digital youth are now using new media and technologies in unexpected and innovative ways, we have to rethink many ...

Liquid Crystalline Elastomers in Soft Robotics: Assessing Promise and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are programmable soft materials that undergo large, anisotropic deformation in response to external stimuli. Their molecular alignment encodes directional actuation in a monolithic structure, making them long‐standing candidates for soft robotic systems.

A Soft Robotic Fish With a Dielectric Elastomer Actuator Body and Negative Stiffness Spine

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This work introduces a bio‐mimetic soft robotic fish driven by fiber‐reinforced dielectric elastomer actuators integrated as its body. By prestretching this active skin against a flexible spine, a negative stiffness system is created, enabling large‐amplitude bending.

Navigating global-local tensions in accountability/autonomy policies: Comparative case studies in 'Asian' universities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The twin policy domains of accountability and autonomy have featured in recent education reforms in many countries, signalling new relationships between governments and educational institutions. Despite different national and localised contexts, a number

Multimodal Human–Robot Interaction Using Human Pose Estimation and Local Large Language Models

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A multimodal human–robot interaction framework integrates human pose estimation (HPE) and a large language model (LLM) for gesture‐ and voice‐based robot control. Speech‐to‐text (STT) enables voice command interpretation, while a safety‐aware arbitration mechanism prioritizes gesture input for rapid intervention.
