Assessing Major Adverse Liver Outcomes With Baclofen Compared to Acamprosate in Compensated Alcohol‐Associated Cirrhosis

open access: yesAlimentary Pharmacology &Therapeutics, Volume 63, Issue 12, Page 1673-1684, June 2026.
We conducted a nationwide, multicenter cohort study using a target trial emulation framework to compare baclofen and acamprosate in patients with compensated alcohol‐associated cirrhosis. After matching, baclofen initiation was associated with a higher 1‐year risk of major adverse liver outcomes, driven primarily by hepatic encephalopathy, particularly

A Membrane‐Centric Plasma Lipidomic Signature of Response to Long‐Acting Naltrexone in Alcohol Use Disorder

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 31, Issue 5, May 2026.
In this responder‐enriched lipidomic substudy, response to long‐acting naltrexone in alcohol use disorder was associated with coordinated remodelling of plasma membrane phospholipids. The signature involved PEMT‐related PC/PE shifts, Lands‐cycle acyl chain editing, and cross‐headgroup redistribution of n‐3 PUFAs and arachidonic acid, defining a ...

Virtual Reality–Based Cue Exposure and Aversion Therapy for Alcohol Dependence: A Randomized Controlled Trial

open access: yesAddiction Biology, Volume 31, Issue 5, May 2026.
Virtual reality–based cue exposure therapy and aversion therapy were evaluated in male inpatients with alcohol dependence. The combined VR‐CET+AT intervention reduced craving and alcohol‐related attentional bias beyond standard care, whereas relapse rates did not differ significantly at 4 or 12 weeks.

Towards Mechanism‐Informed Treatments for Mental Health

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 170, Issue 5, May 2026.
Neuropsychiatric disorders impose a major global health burden, and current treatments, which historically mostly targeted dopamine and serotonin dysfunctions, often provide only partial, symptomatic relief. This review highlights emerging evidence that additional neuromodulator systems, including acetylcholine, norepinephrine, and endocannabinoids ...

The Clinical Manifestation of Homozygous Huntington's Disease

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Huntington's disease is an incurable neurodegenerative disease with deficits in many areas including cognitive, psychiatric, and most notably, motor. It is autosomal dominant, meaning one affected allele is enough to express the condition.

Metabolomics biomarkers to predict acamprosate treatment response in alcohol-dependent subjects

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Precision medicine for alcohol use disorder (AUD) allows optimal treatment of the right patient with the right drug at the right time. Here, we generated multivariable models incorporating clinical information and serum metabolite levels to predict ...

Assessment of early return to drinking in surviving patients with alcohol‐associated hepatitis

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, Volume 50, Issue 4, April 2026.
Among survivors of alcohol‐associated hepatitis, nearly one‐third resumed drinking within 6 months. High baseline drinking frequency and lower educational attainment independently predicted relapse, highlighting a critical window for early, structured addiction‐focused interventions.

Participant Demographic and Baseline Drinking Factors Can Predict Alcohol Use Disorder Pharmacotherapy Clinical Trial Completion and Drinking Outcomes

open access: yesAlcohol, Clinical and Experimental Research, Volume 50, Issue 4, April 2026.
Five multisite AUD pharmacotherapy trial data were merged to explore participant prestudy characteristics as outcome predictors. Pre‐randomization “days since last drink” significantly predicted three drinking outcomes. Further analyses suggested that more than 3–5 days of consecutive abstinence would reduce chances of finding a significant medication ...
