Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) regulates trophoblast syncytialization through organelle stress–induced cellular senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The inhibition of mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) impairs syncytialization and induces cellular senescence via mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress in human trophoblast stem cells, elevating sFlt1/PlGF levels, a hallmark of placental dysfunction in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Antimalarials and the eye [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
Following the first reports in 1954 of the beneficial effects of chloroquine in cases of lupus erythematosus, this drug and its numerous derivatives have been used extensively in the treatment of systemic and discoid lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid ...

A light‐triggered Time‐Resolved X‐ray Solution Scattering (TR‐XSS) workflow with application to protein conformational dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering captures how proteins change shape in real time under near‐native conditions. This article presents a practical workflow for light‐triggered TR‐XSS experiments, from data collection to structural refinement. Using a calcium‐transporting membrane protein as an example, the approach can be broadly applied to study ...

Influence of Blood Glycemia Levels in Refraction, Binocular Vision and Accommodation: A Case Report

open access: yesReports
This case report provides us with insight on how blood glycemia affects refraction, vergence and accommodation in a single diabetic patient. A 21-year-old type I diabetic woman was the subject studied in this report.

Test and evaluation of the 2.4-micron photorefractor ocular screening system [PDF]

open access: yes
An improved 2.4-m photorefractor ocular screening system was tested and evaluated. The photorefractor system works on the principal of obtaining a colored photograph of both human eyes; and, by analysis of the retinal reflex images, certain ocular ...

Why do people not attend for treatment for trachomatous trichiasis in Ethiopia? A study of barriers to surgery. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BACKGROUND: Trachomatous trichiasis (TT) surgery is provided free or subsidised in most trachoma endemic settings. However, only 18-66% of TT patients attend for surgery.

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

[Effect of noise on ocular accommodation].

open access: yesKlinika oczna, 1991
The goal of investigations was the determination of connection between the level of noise and the extra-auditory reaction of the organism--a change of the near point. Changes of accommodation determined by means of a black-and-white check-board test were monitored in the course and after 1 hour exposition to noise of 90 dB-A, 93 dB-A, 96 dB-A or 99 dB ...
