Thin accretion disk signatures in hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields
In the present work, accretion onto a static spherically symmetric black hole in the hybrid metric-Palatini gravity is considered. The Novikov–Thorne model for a relativistic thin accretion disk is used.

Accretion-disk coronae in QSOs [PDF]

open access: yesPublications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1991
Radiation pressure on gas in the hypothesized accretion disks of QSOs will result in a corona. Electrons of 340 kev, equivalent to Te∼3×108 K, may result in a significant. Compton optical depth for the implied mass loss rate. Comptonization of ultraviolet to 30 kev may result in contradiction to observations.

Optimizing photoactivation of PA‐mCherry for optical pooled CRISPR screens

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photoactivatable PA‐mCherry finds widespread use to optically tag individual cells. However, confocal 405 nm UV laser‐scanning (normal scan) is much less efficient than widefield UV illumination, limiting the use of PA‐mCherry on confocal instruments. We remedy this limitation by reporting that rapid and repeated confocal scanning with a low‐intensity,

Accretion Disks: An Overview

open access: yes, 2017
Accretion disks are complex systems which are not yet entirely understood. Here a short overview is given of accretion disk theory, describing the disks, the thin disk approximation to simplify calculations and a description of the alpha-disk model.

Evaluating the involvement of autolysosomes in the nuclear translocation of fluorescent proteins

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Endogenously expressed fluorescent proteins can be degraded by autophagy and transported to cell nuclei via the nuclear pore complex. But in some cell lines, for example, HeLa cells which are positive for immunoreactivity of a receptor ligand, such as UCN I, in cell nuclei, fusion of autolysosome with the nuclear envelope is involved in the nuclear ...

Dynamo–Action in Accretion Disks [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1993
Accretion disks are approximated by thin tori and the generation of magnetic fields by torus–dynamos is investigated. Solutions for the general α2ω–dynamo embedded into vacuum and into an ideally conducting medium are presented. Whereas the former solutions are qualitatively similar to those obtained for thin disks, there is a mode for the latter ...

A new flow chip in combination with multiphoton microscopy as a protocol for longitudinal 3D imaging of tissue calcification under shear stress

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Miniaturized flow chip platform enabling continuous perfusion and longitudinal multiphoton 3D imaging of vascular smooth muscle cell constructs under physiological flow. Brightfield imaging guides region selection, while CellTracker Green and mRuby‐labeled fetuin‐A visualize cells and mineral deposition, respectively. Magnesium supplementation markedly

The Black Hole Spin Controversy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Astrophysical black holes are the simplest possible objects. They are completely described by only two parameters in general relativity, their mass and the specific angular momentum, spin.

The orbital and superhump periods of the dwarf nova HS 0417+7445 in Camelopardalis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We present the 2005-2010 outburst history of the SU UMa-type dwarf HS 0417+7445, along with a detailed analysis of extensive time-series photometry obtained in March 2008 during the second ecorded superoutburst of the system.

The Evolution of Accreting Binaries: From Brown Dwarfs to Supermassive Black Holes

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Circumbinary accretion occurs throughout the universe, from the formation of stars and planets to the aftermath of major galactic mergers. We present an extensive investigation of circumbinary accretion disks, studying circular binaries with mass ratios (
