Modelling accretion in transitional disks [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2013
Transitional disks are protoplanetary disk around young stars that display inner holes in the dust distribution within a few AU, which is accompanied nevertheless by some gas accretion onto the central star. These cavities could possibly be created by the presence of one or more massive planets. If the gap is created by planets and gas is still present

Creep Properties and Deformation Mechanism of Additively Manufactured NiAl‐CrMo Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additively manufactured NiAl‐CrMo composites contain numerous interfaces and cell boundaries that control their creep response. At 700°C under high applied stress, creep is dominated by dislocation‐controlled power‐law mechanisms. At 800°C–900°C and lower stresses, creep is primarily diffusion‐controlled along cell boundaries.

Understanding Balmer Decrements in T Tauri Stars in Terms of Multiflow Magnetospheric Accretion

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Magnetospheric accretion is the paradigm for accretion in classical T Tauri stars (CTTSs). However, the standard, one-flow magnetospheric accretion model fails to replicate important characteristics such as the observed Balmer decrements. We address this

Accretion Disk Coronae [PDF]

open access: yesHighlights of Astronomy, 1989
SummaryAccretion disk coronae around compact objects are the result of strong magnetic activity in the inner regions of accretion disks. Part of the accreting energy is dissipated in te corona and can be observed as hard X-ray emission with a time variability caused by the coronal structures. The interaction of disk coronae with neutron stars and black

Direct Metal Deposition of Graphene–Ti28Nb35.4Zr Matrix Composites With Enhanced Mechanical, Corrosion, and Biocompatibility Properties for Bone Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Graphene nanoplatelet (0.1 wt.%) reinforcement significantly enhances the performance of β Ti‐28Nb‐35.4Zr alloy. Grain refinement, reduced water contact angle, and improved surface characteristics promote osteoblast adhesion and complete surface coverage after 7 days.

Thin accretion disk signatures in hybrid metric-Palatini gravity

open access: yesEuropean Physical Journal C: Particles and Fields
In the present work, accretion onto a static spherically symmetric black hole in the hybrid metric-Palatini gravity is considered. The Novikov–Thorne model for a relativistic thin accretion disk is used.

Accretion Disk Electrodynamics [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1985
Accretion disk electrodynamic phenomenae are separable into two classes: 1) disks and coronae with turbulent magnetic fields; 2) disks and black holes which are connected to a large-scale external magnetic field. Turbulent fields may originate in an α - ω dynamo, provide anomalous viscous transport, and sustain an active corona by magnetic buoyancy ...

Laser‐Induced Graphene from Waste Almond Shells

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Almond shells, an abundant agricultural by‐product, are repurposed to create a fully bioderived almond shell/chitosan composite (ASC) degradable in soil. ASC is converted into laser‐induced graphene (LIG) by laser scribing and proposed as a substrate for transient electronics.

Multi-Phase Thermal Structure & The Origin of the Broad-Line Region, Torus, and Corona in Magnetically-Dominated Accretion Disks

open access: yesThe Open Journal of Astrophysics
Recent simulations have demonstrated the formation of 'flux-frozen' and hyper-magnetized disks, qualitatively distinct from both classical $\alpha$ disks and magnetically-arrested disks, as a natural consequence of fueling gas to supermassive black holes

Models of Accretion Disks

open access: yes, 2012
An accretion flow onto a supermassive black hole is the primary process powering quasars. However, a geometry of this flow is not well constrained. Both global MHD simulations and observations suggest that there are several emission components present in
