Achieving health or achieving wellbeing? [PDF]

open access: yesLearning in Health and Social Care, 2005
AbstractThis article argues that achieving health and achieving wellbeing are different. The use of phenomenological and narrative approaches helped to elicit the meanings, nature and dimensions of wellbeing for ‘lay’ people, and also how wellbeing was maintained, lost and recovered. It indicates that the term ‘wellbeing’ has a much wider meaning than ‘

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Civic and citizenship education, global citizenship education, and education for sustainable development: an analysis of their integrated conceptualization and measurement in the international civic and citizenship education study (ICCS) 2016 and 2022

open access: yesLarge-scale Assessments in Education
Globalization and its impact on contemporary societies have gained new impetus with the notions of global citizenship education (GCED) and education for sustainable development (ESD), considered, together with civic and citizenship education (CCE), as a ...

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

STEM faculty who believe ability is fixed have larger racial achievement gaps and inspire less student motivation in their classes

open access: yesScience Advances, 2019
Racial achievement gaps are twice as large, and all students are less motivated, when STEM faculty believe ability is fixed. An important goal of the scientific community is broadening the achievement and participation of racial minorities in STEM fields.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

An intracellular transporter mitigates the CO2‐induced decline in iron content in Arabidopsis shoots

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study identifies a gene encoding a transmembrane protein, MIC, which contributes to the reduction of shoot Fe content observed in plants under elevated CO2. MIC is a putative Fe transporter localized to the Golgi and endosomal compartments. Its post‐translational regulation in roots may represent a potential target for improving plant nutrition ...

Reassessing weights in large-scale assessments and multilevel models

open access: yesLarge-scale Assessments in Education
When analyzing large-scale assessments (LSAs) that use complex sampling designs, it is important to account for probability sampling using weights. However, the use of these weights in multilevel models has been widely debated, particularly regarding ...
