The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Reassessing weights in large-scale assessments and multilevel models

open access: yesLarge-scale Assessments in Education
When analyzing large-scale assessments (LSAs) that use complex sampling designs, it is important to account for probability sampling using weights. However, the use of these weights in multilevel models has been widely debated, particularly regarding ...

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Reliable and Cost-Effective QuEChERS–UHPLC–MS/MS Method for the Simultaneous Analysis of Ten Mycotoxins in Dendrobium Officinale: A Study on Food-Medicine Homology Quality Control

open access: yesJournal of Analytical Methods in Chemistry
This study developed a method for simultaneously detecting 10 mycotoxins in Dendrobium officinale using the QuEChERS technique combined with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC–MS/MS). The method was optimized for

Gender Equality in Educational Achievement An East-West Comparison [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Data on educational access show gender parity of pupils attending primary and secondary schools in transition countries. The aim of this analysis is to examine whether the gender balance in educational access translates also into gender equality in ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
