Acute Achilles Tendon Rupture in Athletes
Foot and Ankle Clinics, 2013The incidence of AT rupture has increased in recent decades. AT ruptures frequently occur in the third or fourth decade of life in sedentary individuals who play sport occasionally. Ruptures also occur in elite athletes. Clinical examination must be followed by imaging.

There are only a few epidemiological studies on the incidence of Achilles tendon (AT) ruptures. These show an increase in incidence in the West during the past few decades. The main reason is probably the increased popularity of recreational sports among middle-aged people. Ball games constitute the cause of over 60% of AT ruptures in many series.
