This paper constitutes a mathematical elaboration, in a form permitting direct predictions of data, of the empirical discoveries of Helson and Michels concerning the “effect of chromatic adaptation on achromaticity.” An equation is developed permitting the chromaticity of a test spot that appears achromatic against an extended chromatic background to ...

Achromatic polarization rotator
Applied Optics, 2007What we believe to be a new optical element consisting of a single piece isotropic material with three internally reflecting faces for polarization plane rotation by the angle phi=pi/2 is proposed. The principle of operation is based on the geometrical phase effect, which is different in its origin but produces a similar effect to the circular ...

Achromatic optomechanical modulator
Applied Optics, 1986We present details of the construction and performance of an optomechanical amplitude modulator. The heart of the modulator is an oscillating small mirror which makes it a low-power low-voltage device. The modulation frequency is fixed, but, in our model, it can be changed from 10 to 20 kHz by simple adjustments, and the modulator has high transmission.

Phenomenal Transparency in Achromatic Checkerboards
Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1999The study explored the luminance relations that determine the occurrence of achromatic transparency in phenomenal surfaces on complex backgrounds. Let the luminances of the left and right parts of a transparent surface on a bipartite background and those of the left and right parts of the bipartite background be p and q and m and n, respectively ...

Achromatic color vision-I: Perceptive variables of achromatic colors
Vision Research, 1974Abstract Achromatic colors are usually considered to be specifiable by a single perceptive variable, although a few bidimensional systems for specification of such colors have previously been presented. Some of the most important concepts of achromatic color are reviewed, and evaluated against the color variations observable in a disc-ring ...
