The essence of the physical chemical approach to acid–base balance is the understanding that there are three variables that are essential in determining blood pH: partial pressure of CO2, strong ion difference (SID), and total weak acid concentration (ATOT). Neither H+ nor HCO3 − can change unless one or more of these three variables change.
