On the acoustic‐electromagnetic analogy

SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts 1994, 1994
Abstract We investigate the analogy between electromagnetic and acoustic waves, considering the kinematics and the energy balance of wave propagation. It is shown that the propagation of the TEM mode (transverse electric and magnetic) is completely analogous, from the mathematical point of view, to the propagation of viscoelastic SH waves in the ...

The Acoustic Analogy—Thirty Years On

IMA Journal of Applied Mathematics, 1984
This article gives a synoptic review of the aeroacoustic development. It gives an account of the evolution of a technique generated by Lighthill in response to the jet noise problem and points to the new direction, adaptation of Lighthill's theory to the problem on noise generated by the motion of airfoil at very high speed.

Acoustic analog of twisted bilayer graphene

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2022
The emergence of twistronics in bilayer graphene has inspired the creation of new phononic structures that translate quantum effects into macro systems. Here, we introduce an acoustic analog of twisted bilayer graphene that is built with 3D-printed star arrays confined in a two-dimensional acoustic waveguide.

A membrane analogy to an acoustic duct

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1971
Abstract Despite its theoretical limitations, a circular membrane is used experimentally as an analogue to a cylindrical acoustic waveguide. The analogue successfully predicts normal mode behaviour for a cylindrical-annulus waveguide with eccentric boundaries, and the effects of adding further cylindrical boundaries within an existing cylindrical ...

Electromechanical analogies in acoustics

Applied Acoustics, 1970
Abstract It is shown how the study of acoustical systems can be handled using electromechanical analogies. The analysis of lumped systems containing springs, masses and dashpots will be developed and then simple acoustical systems will be analysed. The representation of simple mechanical machines and transducers is considered and then the analysis of

Acoustic analog of the Fermi resonance

Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics Letters, 1999
It is shown that for acoustic waves in crystals nonlinear phenomena of a new type, analogous to some degree to Fermi resonance in molecules, can occur. It is demonstrated on the basis of an analysis of the numerical solution of the equations of motion that for propagation of waves with different polarization and with sound velocities in integral ratio,

On the physical origin of the electro-mechano-acoustical analogy

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2022
The electro-mechano-acoustical (EMA) analogy, introduced in the early 1900s, allows for the modeling of mechanical, acoustical, and EMA devices and systems using schematics of basic electrical elements, making possible the application of the well-established electrical network theory for studying, designing, and characterizing complex systems. By means

Verfication of Noise Prediction Through Acoustic Analogy

13th AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference (28th AIAA Aeroacoustics Conference), 2007
This paper makes a contribution to the definition and evaluation of verification test cases for a far-field noise formulation in the time domain, in which the 3D Ffocws Williams and Hawkings equation is used to predict the noise level from bodies in arbitrary motion.

Mechanical and Electrical Analogies of the Acoustical Path

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1939
The infinite acoustical path is treated as a smooth mechanical transmission line, using Firestone's method of drawing schematic diagrams. The method is adopted of translating thermodynamical, hydrodynamical and collision processes into purely mechanical terms by solving for the circuit elements from their definitions.

Acoustic Analogies for Quantum Mechanics

2004
In Chap. 2, we considered the analogy between the propagation of electromagnetic waves and quantum waves, based on the formal similarity between the Helmholtz and the Schrodinger equation. However, a similar analogy holds for sound waves. This is to be expected since sound waves are not so different from electromagnetic waves.
