River Sand and Gravel Mining: Global Drivers, Impacts, and Pathways for Sustainable Management

open access: yesReviews of Geophysics, Volume 64, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract River sand and gravel are mined worldwide at volumes that now rival their natural replenishment, yet quantitative knowledge of this mining activity and its consequences lags far behind many other global environmental pressures. We synthesize 411 peer‐reviewed studies published since 1974 within a new Driver‐to‐Management Pathway for ...

Characterizing the Distribution of Nepheloid Layers and Their Response to Hydrodynamics in the NE Rockall Trough, NE Atlantic Ocean

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Suspended and slow‐sinking particles, especially those concentrated within nepheloid layers, can act as pivotal mediators of oceanic carbon transport and benthic‐pelagic coupling. However, identifying nepheloid layers and distinguishing their composition (i.e., inorganic particles, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fish) using only acoustic ...

Brine Pool Microbes Enrich Metalliferous Sediments in Salt Giant Basins

open access: yesAGU Advances, Volume 7, Issue 6, September 2026.
Abstract We report the discovery of an extinct deep‐sea brine pool in the Red Sea's Hume Deep, providing evidence that rift‐shoulder pools are ephemeral on millennial timescales, and that the microbially‐enriched metalliferous deposits produced during the pool's active phase persist into the stratigraphic record.

Seabed acoustic classification in the Pelotas basin, Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Oceanography, 2013
The present study sought to develop a seabed map of the region of the Pelotas Basin using acoustic methods. A total number of 1,507,823 seabed reflectivity data, collected during six oceanographic surveys, were processed to generate a seabed map.

Depositional History of the Namibian Mud Belt Reveals Late Holocene Weakening of the Benguela Coastal Current

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 27, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract We investigate late Holocene changes in the northern Benguela Upwelling System using a multi‐proxy approach on shallow shelf deposits from the Namibian mud belt. Three sediment cores characterized by organic carbon‐rich, anoxic, and partly gas‐bearing sediments were retrieved along a sampling transect at 23°S in August 2019.

Acoustic seabed classification applied to Baltic benthic habitat studies: a new approach

open access: yesOceanologia, 2007
The application of acoustic methods for the classification of bottomhabitats is based mostly on the analysis of measured parameters without relating them to the bathymetric structure.

Physics-Guided Random Forest Classification of Marine Sediments Using Frequency-Dependent Acoustic Reflection Spectra

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Traditional acoustic seabed classification methods, which are often sensitive to survey geometry and environmental conditions, have limitations in reliability and reproducibility.

First Direct Observations of Dilute Antarctic Turbidity Currents Associated With Dense Water Overflows

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 131, Issue 9, September 2026.
Abstract Turbidity currents are increasingly recognised as a key mechanism for transporting sediment into the deep ocean, yet their structure, behavior, and long‐term impact in Antarctic submarine canyons remain poorly understood owing to a lack of direct observations.

Passive acoustic quantification of gas releases

open access: yes, 2014
The assessment of undersea gas leakages from anthropogenic and natural sources is becoming increasingly important. This includes the detection of gas leaks and the quantification of gas flux. This has applications within oceanography (e.g.

A scheme to analyze the influence of ocean sound propagation on passive sonar target classification and recognition

open access: yesAIP Advances
The time-varying, space-varying, and frequency-varying characteristics of the marine environment severely affect the classification and recognition of underwater passive sonar targets.
