Number of observable features in the acoustic Raman spectra of nanocrystals [PDF]
Low-frequency Raman scattering spectra are presented for gold nanocrystals with diameters 3.5 and 13 nm. The frequencies of the Raman peaks but also their number are shown to vary with the nanocrystal size. These results are analyzed using both the continuous elastic medium approximation and an atomistic approach.

Recent Progress in Distributed Brillouin Sensors Based on Few-Mode Optical Fibers
Brillouin scattering is a dominant inelastic scattering observed in optical fibers, where the energy and momentum transfer between photons and acoustic phonons takes place.

On the robustness of acoustic black hole spectra
We study the robustness of the spectrum emitted by an acoustic black hole by considering series of stationary flows that become either subsonic or supersonic, i.e. when the horizon disappears. We work with the superluminal Bogoliubov dispersion of Bose--Einstein condensates.

Representation of acoustic communication signals by insect auditory receptor neurons [PDF]
Despite their simple auditory systems, some insect species recognize certain temporal aspects of acoustic stimuli with an acuity equal to that of vertebrates; however, the underlying neural mechanisms and coding schemes are only partially understood.

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Current Status and Challenges in Data Collection for Aerospace Coatings Deposited by Plasma Spraying
An innovative approach has been integrated into the GRENAT project to optimize plasma spraying and coating performance. Raw materials are accelerated and melted in the plasma generated by torches, creating coatings. Monitoring sensors collect process data which are combined with ex situ characterization data.

Phonon confinement and size effect in Raman spectra of ZnO nanoparticles
We study Raman spectra of ZnO nanoparticles of 5–12 nm size in the whole range of the first-order phonon bands. We apply the 3D phonon confinement model (PCM) for the interpretation of the observed Raman spectra.

Weathering the storm: developments in the acoustic sensing of wind and rain [PDF]
An Acoustic Rain Gauge (ARG) analyses the underwater sound levels across a wide frequency range, classifies the observed spectrum according to likely source and then determines the local wind speed or rain rate as appropriate. Thispaper covers a trial on
