Therapeutic Apheresis for Intravenous Methylprednisolone‐Refractory Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder: Clinical and Radiological Outcomes in a Single‐Center Case Series

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is a relapsing autoimmune disease of the central nervous system. High‐dose intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) is the standard first‐line therapy for acute attacks, although some patients remain refractory.

Evidence-based practice ‘on-the-go’: using ViaTherapy as a tool to enhance clinical decision making in upper limb rehabilitation after stroke, a quality improvement initiative

open access: yesBMJ Open Quality, 2019
Recovery of upper limb function after stroke is currently sub-optimal, despite good quality evidence showing that interventions enabling repetitive practice of task-specific activity are effective in improving function.

Exploring the intersection of brain injury and mental health in survivors of intimate partner violence: A scoping review

open access: yesFrontiers in Public Health, 2023
RationaleIntimate partner violence (IPV) is the most commonly occurring form of violence against women. The most common site of injury in IPV is the head, face, and neck, resulting in possible brain injury (BI). Independently, mental health (MH) concerns

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Establishing, versus Maintaining, Brain Function: A Neuro-computational Model of Cortical Reorganization after Injury to the Immature Brain

open access: yes, 2010
The effect of age at injury on outcome after acquired brain injury (ABI) has been the subject of much debate. Many argue that young brains are relatively tolerant of injury.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Methodological issues in the design and evaluation of supported communication for aphasia training: a cluster-controlled feasibility study

open access: yesBMJ Open, 2016
Objective To assess the feasibility and acceptability of training stroke service staff to provide supported communication for people with moderate–severe aphasia in the acute phase; assess the suitability of outcome measures; collect data to inform ...
