ATG4B is required for mTORC1‐mediated anabolic activity and is associated with clinical outcomes in non‐small cell lung cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The relationship between anabolic and catabolic processes governing lung cancer cell growth is nuanced. We show that ATG4B, an autophagy regulator, is elevated in lung cancer and that high ATG4B is associated with worse patient outcomes. Targeting ATG4B in cells reduces growth, protein synthesis, and mTORC1 activity, demonstrating a new relationship ...

A hypothetical disease of the immune system that may bear some relation to the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

open access: yesGenetica, 1995
The cells of an individual immune system could be so highly infected with latent viruses that were immunologically distinct from one another as to result in an immune dysfunction resembling the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

Diabetes‐induced vascular calcification is associated with low pyrophosphate and its oral supplementation prevents calcification in diabetic mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Induction of diabetes in three different mouse strains uniformly resulted in an increase in TNAP activity and a reduction in pyrophosphate (PPi) in the circulation. Inhibition of TNAP restored plasma PPi. Diabetes‐induced calcification in the media layer of the aorta was detected only in the Abcc6−/− strain, which is predisposed to ectopic ...

A Rare Case of Pseudomonas aeruginosa-Associated Diarrhea in a Cirrhotic Patient

open access: yesCase Reports in Hepatology
While rare, cases of community-acquired Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PsA) enterocolitis have been reported and are associated with recent antibiotic use and immunocompromised hosts.

Establishment of a coculture system for Porphyromonas gingivalis and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using spheroid culture and LATS inhibition

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We established a spheroid coculture system enabling viable Porphyromonas gingivalis–HNSCC interactions under normoxic conditions. Inhibition of LATS1/2 maintains tumor cells in an undifferentiated state, which may promote spheroid growth and create a more permissive environment for bacterial persistence.

A Comprehensive View on the Mechanisms of Coronavirus Escaping Innate Immunity

open access: yesVeterinary Sciences
Coronaviruses are a group of widespread infectious pathogens that pose a serious threat to human and animal health. Corona Virus Disease 2019, instigated by severe acute respiratory SARS-CoV-2, has presented an unprecedented challenge to global public ...
