The molecular mechanisms underlying acrosome biogenesis elucidated by gene-manipulated mice

Biology of Reproduction, 2021
Sexual reproduction requires the fusion of two gametes in a multistep and multifactorial process termed fertilization. One of the main steps that ensures successful fertilization is acrosome reaction.

The acrosomal zonule

Tissue and Cell, 1982
A structure associated with the developing acrosome during spermiogenesis in the rat and the Chinese hamster is described. The acrosomal zonule first appears in the cap phase of spermiogenesis and can be detected at all stages of development until after spermiation. The role of the acrosomal zonule is discussed.

Mammalian sperm acrosomal neuraminidases

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1970
Abstract A neuraminidase and a neuraminidase-like factor (NLF) were demonstrated for the first time in acrosomes of rabbit, bull, hamster, ram and human spermatozoa. The neuraminidase is similar to the known mammalian neuraminidases, but the NLF is unique in that it renders bound sialic acid reactive in Warren's colorimetric assay but does not ...

Monoclonal antibodies to canine intra-acrosomal sperm proteins recognizing acrosomal status during capacitation and acrosome reaction

Andrologia, 2009
Monoclonal antibodies Ds-1 and Ds-2 specifically labelling dog sperm acrosome were prepared by immunization of mice with acetic acid extracts of dog spermatozoa. Electron microscopy and indirect immunofluorescence localized the site of Ds-1 and Ds-2 proteins inside the acrosomal vesicle.

An organized distribution of acrosomal proteinase in rabbit sperm acrosomes

Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1975
AbstractAcrosomal proteinase was found to be present in a highly organized distribution within the acrosomes of rabbit spermatozoa by cytochemistry. This distribution consists of at least six linear loops of evenly spaced proteinase granules, which run diagonally across the flat side of the sperm head in a criss‐crossing pattern with the two most ...

A MODIFIED ACROSOME INDUCTION TEST

Archives of Andrology, 2000
Many types of acrosome induction tests require special equipment and reagents that are not available to most clinicians; thus, simpler tests seem desirable. A modified acrosome induction test has been developed that uses basic reagents and a light microscope, which are available in most office settings.

Mammalian Sperm Acrosomal Enzymes and the Acrosome Reaction

1991
The sperm acrosome is an intracellular membrane-limited organelle that surrounds the anterior portion of the nucleus. It consists of an inner acrosomal membrane that is closely associated with the nucleus and is continuous with the outer acrosomal membrane. The acrosomal matrix proper is located between the two membranes.
