Distal urethral obstruction in an eight‐week‐old colt with struvite urolithiasis

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Education, Volume 38, Issue 3, Page e130-e136, March 2026.
Summary An 8‐week‐old Thoroughbred colt presented with acute colic signs. Physical examination and transcutaneous ultrasound of the abdomen and penis revealed a urinary tract obstruction in the distal urethra due to urolithiasis. A distal urethrotomy over the site of obstruction was performed to remove the urolith and relieve the obstruction.

Human epithelial cell death caused by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans infection [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Medical Microbiology, 2000
The gingival sulcus is the shallow crevice around the tooth, and its epithelium is a gateway for initial bacterial infection in periodontal disease. Recent studies have shown that Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans invades an epithelial cell line, KB cells, in vitro.

Biofilm formation among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolates from patients with urinary tract infection. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Staphylococci have been confirmed to form biofilms on various biomaterials. The purpose of this study was to investigate biofilm formation among methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates from patients with urinary tract infection (UTI ...

Beyond nocardioform: Transcriptionally active microbes and host responses in equine mucoid placentitis

open access: yesEquine Veterinary Journal, Volume 58, Issue 2, Page 601-618, March 2026.
Abstract Background Nocardioform placentitis (NP) is an understudied form of equine placentitis historically attributed to nocardioform bacteria, yet it remains uncertain whether these organisms are the sole pathogens involved. Objectives To elucidate the pathophysiology of NP and the host–pathogen interaction. Study Design In vivo clinical multi‐omics

Relapsing–Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Is Associated With a Dysbiotic Oral Microbiome

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Volume 13, Issue 2, Page 256-269, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Objective Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation, demyelination, and neurological impairment. While the gut microbiota's role in MS is extensively studied, the association between the oral microbiota and MS remains underexplored, particularly in North American cohorts.

Nexus of Whey Proteins, Gut Dysbiosis, and Colonic Health

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 2, February 2026.
Whey proteins possess antimicrobial and prebiotic properties that modulate gut microbiota by promoting beneficial bacteria like Bifidobacterium while suppressing pathogens. This modulation enhances short‐chain fatty acid production and strengthens intestinal barrier integrity, potentially alleviating dysbiosis‐related conditions such as colitis and ...

Novel Experimental Mouse Model to Study the Pathogenesis and Therapy of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae Infection

open access: yesPathogens
Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae (APP) is a major cause of lung infections in pigs. An experimental mouse has the edge over pigs pertaining to the ease of experimental operation, disease study and therapy, abundance of genetic resources, and cost. However,

Staphylococcus aureus pneumonia and pararectal abscess in a horse secondary to catheter‐related septic thrombophlebitis

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 1, February 2026.
Abstract This report describes the development of methicillin‐sensitive Staphylococcus aureus septic jugular thrombophlebitis, pneumonia and a delayed‐onset pararectal abscess secondary to bacterial embolization from intravenous catheterization in a horse and demonstrates the successful treatment of all aspects. A racing Arabian mare was presented with
