Recovering nutrients from urine – A golden opportunity for sustainable fertiliser production

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 8, Issue 3, Page 747-753, May 2026.
Agricultural industrialisation has led to levels of nutrients in the environment that are well above safe operating limits, yet fertiliser use is necessary to feed a growing population. The recovery of nutrients from human urine in large, developed cities may offset some of the ecological and economic impacts associated with fertiliser production, as ...

Toward Sustainable Spent Cathode Recycling Technology: Failure Mechanism, Advancing Technology and Prospect

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 5, May 2026.
ABSTRACT The cathode materials from spent batteries are expected to become a resource stream rich in critical metals, drawing increasing attention to the disposal and recycling of spent lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs). However, due to current technological limitations, the recycling efficiency and environmental sustainability of LIBs still face ...

Benthic Macroinvertebrate Recovery After Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades: Implications for Biomonitoring

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 42, Issue 4, Page 824-836, May 2026.
ABSTRACT During the past decade, major upgrades have been made to the Kitchener and Waterloo wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the Grand River watershed in Ontario, Canada. As part of efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of these investments (>$450 M CDN), a benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) monitoring program was initiated by sampling upstream and

Exploration of Raw and Ferromagnetic Nanocomposite Sugar Bagasse Adsorbents for Heavy Metal Removal in Wastewater: Kinetics, Isotherms, and Thermodynamics Studies

open access: yesChemistrySelect, Volume 11, Issue 19, 20 May 2026.
Sugar bagasse‐based ferromagnetic nanocomposite adsorbent excellently adsorbed heavy metal ions compared to raw bagasse. Adsorption efficiency above 80% was achieved within 10 min. Regeneration studies yielded good adsorption capacities even in the fifth regeneration cycle.

Outline of a Washing Treatment to Improve Electric Arc Furnace Slag Environmental Behavior

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 97, Issue 5, Page 2541-2558, May 2026.
This study evaluates a water‐washing treatment for electric arc furnace slag to reduce the leaching of hazardous elements (Cr, Ba, Mo, and V), enabling its reuse. The process effectively decreases leachate concentrations. Using the treated slag as a substitute aggregate in concrete reduces greenhouse gases emissions by 42.5% compared to landfilling ...
