A Microbial‐Explicit Soil Organic Carbon Decomposition Model (MESDM): Development and Testing at a Semiarid Grassland Site

open access: yesJournal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems, 2022
Explicit representations of microbial processes in soil organic carbon (SOC) decomposition models have received increasing attention, because soil heterotrophic respiration remains one of the greatest uncertainties in climate‐carbon feedbacks projected ...

Simulation-Based and Data-Driven Techniques for Quantifying the Influence of the Carbon Binder Domain on Electrochemical Properties of Li-Ion Batteries

open access: yesEnergies, 2022
Most cathode materials for Li-ion batteries exhibit a low electronic conductivity. Therefore, a considerable amount of conductive additives is added during electrode production.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Surface and interface chemistry in metal‐free electrocatalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction

open access: yesSmartMat, 2022
The electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value‐added fuels and chemicals presents a sustainable route to alleviate CO2 emissions, promote carbon‐neutral cycles and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.

Kinetic Constants Determined from Membrane Transport Measurements: Carbonic Anhydrase Activity at High Concentrations [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1974
Facilitated diffusion rates can be used to determine kinetic constants for rapid reactions occurring within membranes and thin fluid layers. We have applied this technique to the study of the reversible CO 2 hydration reactions catalyzed by carbonic anhydrase (EC 4.2.1.1; carbonate hydro-lyase).

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Flying green from a carbon neutral airport : the case of Brussels [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The aviation sector is one of the fastest growing emitters of greenhouse gases worldwide. In addition, airports have important local environmental impacts, mainly in the form of noise pollution and deterioration in air quality. Although noise nuisance in

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

Environmental leapfrogging: Paths and strategies to decarbonise transport in Ethiopia

open access: yesTransportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives
Carbon dioxide emissions from passenger transportation are increasing worldwide and especially in developing countries (DCs). Maintaining a conventional approach to transportation, which is resource-intensive and environmentally damaging, and pursuing ...
