Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

The Coupled Wing Morphing of Ornithopters Improves Attitude Control and Agile Flight

open access: yesMachines
Bird wings are exquisite mechanisms integrated with multiple morphological deformation joints. The larger avian species are particularly adept at utilizing their wings’ flapping, folding, and twisting motions to control the wing angle and area.

Evolution of twist-shear and dip-shear during X-class flare of 13 December 2006: Hinode observations

open access: yes, 2010
The non-potentiality (NP) of the solar magnetic fields is measured traditionally in terms of magnetic shear angle i.e., the angle between observed and potential field azimuth.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Constraining 3D Magnetic Field Extrapolations Using The Twin Perspectives of STEREO [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The 3D magnetic topology of a solar active region (NOAA 10956) was reconstructed using a linear force-free field extrapolation constrained using the twin perspectives of \emph{STEREO}.

ACTIVE-TWIST ROTOR CONTROL APPLICATIONS FOR UAVs [PDF]

open access: yesTransformational Science and Technology for the Current and Future Force, 2006
The current state-of-the-art in active-twist rotor control is discussed using representative examples from analytical and experimental studies, and the application to rotary-wing UAVs is considered. Topics include vibration and noise reduction, rotor performance improvement, active blade tracking, stability augmentation, and rotor blade de-icing.

Homologous expression and purification of human HAX‐1 for structural studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This research protocol provides detailed instructions for cloning, expressing, and purifying large quantities of the intrinsically disordered human HAX‐1 protein, N‐terminally fused to a cleavable superfolder GFP, from mammalian cells. HAX‐1 is predicted to undergo posttranslational modifications and to interact with membranes, various cellular ...

New dynamo pattern revealed by solar helical magnetic fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Previously unobservable mirror asymmetry of the solar magnetic field -- a key ingredient of the dynamo mechanism which is believed to drive the 11-year activity cycle -- has now been measured.

Active twisting for adaptive droplet collection

open access: yesNature Computational Science
Abstract Many xeric plant leaves exhibit bending and twisting morphology, which may contribute to their important biological and physical functions adapted to drought and desert conditions. Revealing the relationships between various morphologies and functionalities can inspire device designs for meeting increasingly stringent environmental ...

Strong optical activity from twisted-cross photonic metamaterials

open access: yesOptics Letters, 2009
Following a recent theoretical suggestion and microwave experiments, we fabricate photonic metamaterials composed of pairs of twisted gold crosses using two successive electron-beam-lithography steps and intermediate planarization via a spin-on dielectric.
