Identifying transcription factors controlling the basal expression of human MRP4 highlights a substantial role for Sp1

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The MRP4 transporter exports several drugs and signaling molecules. Here, we identified key promoter elements regulating basal MRP4 expression. Using reporter assays, we defined a conserved region with essential Sp1 and contributory Ets sites, which controlled basal MRP4 expression.

Prognostic Implications of Sleep Architecture for Patients Admitted to the Intensive Care Unit With Status Epilepticus

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Status epilepticus (SE) is associated with significant mortality. Sleep architecture may reflect normal brain function. Impaired sleep architecture is associated with poorer outcomes in numerous conditions. Here we investigate the association of sleep architecture in continuous EEG (cEEG) with survival in SE.

Remote Ischemic Preconditioning Neither Improves Survival nor Reduces Myocardial or Kidney Injury in Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
BACKGROUND: Peri-interventional myocardial injury occurs frequently during transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We assessed the effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIPC) on myocardial injury, acute kidney injury (AKIN) and 6-month ...

Persistent Acute Kidney Injury* [PDF]

open access: yesCritical Care Medicine, 2015
One of the more challenging aspects for the study and clinical evaluation of acute kidney injury (AKI) is the fact that initially, dysfunction is indistinguishable from a normal decrease in function in response to a number of abnormal clinical states (e.g., hypovolemia, hypotension). Indeed even a normal stress response may result in transient oliguria.

Perioperative acute kidney injury [PDF]

open access: yesPerioperative Medicine, 2012
Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a serious complication in the perioperative period, and is consistently associated with increased rates of mortality and morbidity. Two major consensus definitions have been developed in the last decade that allow for easier comparison of trial evidence.

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Pro/con debate: continuous versus intermittent dialysis for acute kidney injury: a never-ending story yet approaching the finish? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The question of whether renal replacement therapy should be applied in an intermittent or continuous mode to the patient with acute kidney injury has been the topic of several controlled studies and meta-analyses.

Influenza Vaccination Responses in Disabled Stroke Patients: A Single‐Center Prospective Observational Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective This study aimed to investigate the immunological response to influenza vaccination, the incidence and severity of influenza infection, and the side effects of the vaccination in patients with ischemic stroke. Methods This prospective observational study was conducted between 2023 and 2024 at Ramathibodi Hospital.

Acute Kidney Injury and Chronic Kidney Disease: A Bidirectional Road

open access: yesHaseki Tıp Bülteni, 2017
Acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) have many common points regarding risk factors, etiology, clinical and laboratory factors. We aimed in this review to discuss the outcome, the risk of CKD, cardiovascular and overall mortality ...
