Physical Function Trajectories in Survivors of Acute Respiratory Failure

open access: yesAnnals of the American Thoracic Society, 2019
Rationale: Survivorship from critical illness has improved; however, factors mediating the functional recovery of persons experiencing a critical illness remain incompletely understood.

Amplification‐Free, Sequencing‐Free, Detection of Viral RNAs with Variant Specification by Discrete Nanocounting

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Integrating selective RNA shortcut, targeted gene isolation, and micro‐arrayed nanoimaging, the NanoPick‐array platform excels in detecting severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) at just 60 copies µL−1 and accurately differentiating variants at the single‐nucleotide level. It ensures 100% accuracy for samples with cycle threshold (

Acute Respiratory Failure

open access: yes, 2016
Acute respiratory failure accounts for 25–40 % of ICU admissions and carries a mortality rate of 30 % or more. In this chapter, we classify acute respiratory failure in two main types, based on their primary physiologic abnormality: Disorders of the airways, where increase of airway resistance to gas flow determines pharmacologic treatment and ...

Acute respiratory failure in pregnancy [PDF]

open access: yesObstetric Medicine, 2015
Respiratory failure affects up to 0.2% of pregnancies, more commonly in the postpartum period. Altered maternal respiratory physiology affects the assessment and management of these patients. Respiratory failure may result from pregnancy-specific conditions such as preeclampsia, amniotic fluid embolism or peripartum cardiomyopathy.

Noninvasive ventilation in acute respiratory failure: which recipe for success?

open access: yesEuropean Respiratory Review, 2018
Noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NPPV) to treat acute respiratory failure has expanded tremendously over the world in terms of the spectrum of diseases that can be successfully managed, the locations of its application and achievable goals. The

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.

Boussignac CPAP in acute respiratory failure

open access: yesItalian Journal of Medicine, 2013
Introduction: The application of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is one of the most important therapeutic interventions used in patients with acute respiratory failure (ARF) secondary to acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema (ACPE).

Intraoral Drug Delivery: Bridging the Gap Between Academic Research and Industrial Innovations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Intraoral drug delivery offers a promising route for systemic and localized therapies, yet challenges such as enzymatic degradation, limited permeability, and microbial interactions hinder efficacy. This figure highlights innovative strategies—mucoadhesive materials, enzyme inhibitors, and permeation enhancers—to overcome these barriers.

Evaluationof efficacy of noninvasive ventilation in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure

open access: yesEgyptian Journal of Chest Disease and Tuberculosis, 2020
Objective The role of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) in patients with acute respiratory failure is uncertain, so we conducted an observational trial of NIV comparing it with standard oxygen therapy in 109 patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure ...
