Human hypoxia models in aerospace medicine: Potential applications for human pharmacological research

open access: yesBritish Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Aerospace medicine required controlled terrestrial models to investigate influences of altered atmosphere conditions, such as hypoxia, on human health and performance. These models could potentially be expanded to encompass disease conditions or treatment targets regulated through hypoxia or hypercapnia.

Plasma Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein and Neurofilament Light Are Elevated in Bipolar Depression: Evidence for Neuroprogression and Astrogliosis

open access: yesBipolar Disorders, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Recent advances now allow detection of brain‐specific proteins in blood, including neurofilament light chain (NfL), a marker of axonal pathology, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), indicative of astrocytic activation. Given the evidence of astroglial pathology and neuronal dysfunction in bipolar disorder, and ongoing ...

Mapping VEXAS‐associated and rare UBA1 variants in the United Kingdom: Insights from patient cohorts and the general population

open access: yesBritish Journal of Haematology, EarlyView.
VEXAS syndrome is a late‐onset inflammatory disorder with rheumatological and haematological features. Epidemiological studies of VEXAS syndrome so far have been limited. Analysis of various UK cohorts estimates the incidence of VEXAS to be 1.51/100 000, or 171 new cases in the population of men over the age of 50 who are being investigated for myeloid

Herpes simplex virus‐1 infection alters microtubule‐associated protein Tau splicing and promotes Tau pathology in neural models of Alzheimer's disease

open access: yesBrain Pathology, EarlyView.
HSV‐1 infection alters MAPT splicing and promotes Tau pathology in neural models of Alzheimer's disease. HSV‐1 infection in brain organoids and neuronal models increase 4R‐MAPT splicing and Tau hyperphosphorylation. HSV‐1 ICP27 is both necessary and sufficient for inducing these changes highlighting the potential role of HSV‐1 in Alzheimer's disease ...

Network medicine and systems pharmacology approaches to predicting adverse drug effects

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, EarlyView.
Identifying and understanding the relationships between drug intake and adverse effects that can occur due to inadvertent molecular interactions between drugs and targets is a difficult task, especially considering the numerous variables that can influence the onset of such events.
