Climate change adaptation strategies for Australian birds [PDF]

open access: yes
In the first continental analysis of the effects of climate change on a faunal group, we identified that the climate space of 101 Australian terrestrial and inland water bird taxa is likely to be entirely gone by 2085, 16 marine taxa have breeding sites ...

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

Farm-level adaptation strategies to climate change-induced hazards by lowland smallholder farmers in Southern Ethiopia

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture
Climate change deteriorates farm production by triggering floods, droughts, crop pests, and diseases. Resolving this problem using effective agro-ecological specific adaptation strategies is essential for ensuring a resilient system of livelihood in ...

Adaptation strategies of Luxembourg's financial centre under pressure [PDF]

open access: yes
The financial crisis has highlighted the vulnerability of International Financial Centres (IFCs). However, very little is known about specialised IFCs, in particular about the impact on their niche activities and the strategies they have developed to ...

Organic Farms in the EU: Policy impacts and adaptation strategies of typical arable and dairy farms [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Organic farming is increasingly considered in the European Common Agricultural Policy. Sound evaluations of the effects of policy measures on organic farms in the EU are needed to face the challenges in future policy design.

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Exploring tomato farmers’ knowledge and adaptation practices to climate change: Insights from Chinsali district, Zambia

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture
Climate change poses a severe threat to agriculture in developing nations, with smallholder farmers in Zambia being particularly vulnerable. This study examined the knowledge and awareness of climate change among tomato farmers in Chinsali District ...

Crosstalk between the ribosome quality control‐associated E3 ubiquitin ligases LTN1 and RNF10

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Loss of the E3 ligase LTN1, the ubiquitin‐like modifier UFM1, or the deubiquitinating enzyme UFSP2 disrupts endoplasmic reticulum–ribosome quality control (ER‐RQC), a pathway that removes stalled ribosomes and faulty proteins. This disruption may trigger a compensatory response to ER‐RQC defects, including increased expression of the E3 ligase RNF10 ...
