Spectral estimate in ADCP

Oceans '97. MTS/IEEE Conference Proceedings, 2002
An acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measures the backscattering wave in a moving medium, which is a non-stationary stochastic process. The authors' research shows that, due to the contribution of motion, there exists a Doppler frequency shift, widening, asymmetry and splitting of spectral peaks in the spectra of the echo.

Principles of ADCP deployment methodologies

Proceedings of the European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference, 2023
ADCPs are regularly used for resource characterization in wave and tidal energy sites; however, methodologies and best practices are entirely dependent on the site characteristics and the assets available. EMEC have used their widely varied experience at multiple sites and locations to develop a review of methodologies and the pros and cons of ...

Ancestry of ADCPs

2015 IEEE/OES Eleveth Current, Waves and Turbulence Measurement (CWTM), 2015
Fifty years ago, an incredibly creative period of work by William S. Richardson ushered in the modern era of ocean instrumentation for measuring currents. Although an ADCP uses sonar-based technology, quite different from Richardson's devices, the functional capabilities of an ADCP can be traced to his pioneering work.

Single ping ADCP data

Proceedings of the IEEE Fourth Working Conference on Current Measurement, 1990
Because acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data are inherently noisy, they are usually presented in an averaged form. But a great deal can be learned, particularly about the ADCP system itself, by looking at single ping data. The author presents examples of analyses done on single ping data and shows how these data can be used to understand ...

Streampro ADCP performance characteristics

Proceedings of the IEEE/OES Eighth Working Conference on Current Measurement Technology, 2005., 2005
Field and laboratory testing of the StreamPro ADCP obtain bottom tracking velocity standard deviation of less than 1 cm/sec with one-second integration time. Water velocity profile standard deviation measured with a new pulse-to-pulse coherent profiling mode obtains standard deviation of less than 5 mm/sec with one-second integration time. This mode is

ADCP Deployments near Offshore Structures

OCEANS 2007, 2007
A recent comparison study of ADCPs against a nearby mooring was carried out by the Woods Hole Group (WHG) under a contract to the combined Climate And Simulation of Eddies and Eddy Joint Industry Projects (CASE/EJIP) offshore industry groups. The ADCPs were deployed at 2,000 m depth in the Gulf of Mexico and positioned approximately 65 m from a ...

Wave measurements with an ADCP

Proceedings of the IEEE Sixth Working Conference on Current Measurement (Cat. No.99CH36331), 1999
A standard four beam 1.2 MHz ADCP was deployed in a sea bed frame in Red Wharf Bay, off Anglesey in the Irish Sea, in a water depth of 23 m at low water. The instrument sampled every 2 seconds, for 25 hours, recording beam data in 20 one metre bins from 3.6 to 22.6 m above the bed. The beams were at 20 degrees to the vertical.

Data from new shallow water ADCP

Oceans 2003. Celebrating the Past ... Teaming Toward the Future (IEEE Cat. No.03CH37492), 2004
Summary form only given. Data from a new shallow water ADCP is presented and discussed in detail. This new instrument bottom tracks and profiles in 10 cm water depth with a maximum range of 2 meters. Fixed position and moving platform data are presented that show the performance with depth cells as small as 1 cm. Data is presented fro several locations

Field testing of a new ADCP

2011 IEEE/OES 10th Current, Waves and Turbulence Measurements (CWTM), 2011
Since its introduction in 1992, the Teledyne RDI Instruments (TRDI) Workhorse ADCP has become ubiquitous, with literally thousands of systems deployed in nearly every body of water on earth. While the measurement itself remains relatively unchanged, in the intervening years the use of the measurements has changed to an extraordinary extent.

Tests of two prototype Workhorse ADCPs

'Challenges of Our Changing Global Environment'. Conference Proceedings. OCEANS '95 MTS/IEEE, 2002
Two field tests were performed on RD Instruments' (RDI) new Workhorse acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). The instruments were compared against an RDI DR1200 ADCP at two sites in Tampa Bay, Florida: under the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and in Old Port Tampa.
