David Garbers' Contributions to Chemotaxis Signaling in Sperm

open access: yesMolecular Reproduction and Development, Volume 91, Issue 10, October 2024.
ABSTRACT This review focuses on the contribution of the late David Garbers to chemotaxis of sperm, in particular from sea urchin. We will describe his discovery of chemotactic peptides and their cognate receptors, his discovery of a sperm‐specific, unique Na+/H+ exchanger that represents a chimera between a solute carrier (SLC) and an ion channel ...

Pre‐clinical and early clinical considerations for the development of non‐hormonal contraceptives for men

open access: yesAndrology, Volume 12, Issue 7, Page 1558-1567, October 2024.
Abstract Introduction This manuscript presents non‐hormonal male contraceptive development in the context of mitigating risk to investigators and investors. Objective The manuscript uses examples to illustrate drug development principles to move a project from discovery to development.

Soluble adenylyl cyclase is an acid‐base sensor in rainbow trout red blood cells that regulates intracellular pH and haemoglobin–oxygen binding

open access: yesActa Physiologica, Volume 240, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract Aim To identify the physiological role of the acid‐base sensing enzyme, soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC), in red blood cells (RBC) of the model teleost fish, rainbow trout. Methods We used: (i) super‐resolution microscopy to determine the subcellular location of sAC protein; (ii) live‐cell imaging of RBC intracellular pH (pHi) with specific sAC ...

Comparison of genetic and epigenetic profiles of periodontitis according to the presence of type 2 diabetes

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 5, Issue 7, July 2024.
Periodontitis accompanied by type 2 diabetes exhibits significant hypomethylation of Fc gamma receptor‐related genes compared with periodontitis. Periodontitis accompanied by type 2 diabetes shows a notable increase in C>T base substitutions within Fc gamma receptor‐related genes compared with periodontitis.

Identification and validation of a novel anoikis‐related prognostic model for prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Genetics &Genomic Medicine, Volume 12, Issue 4, April 2024.
Our study has identified a novel anoikis‐related signature consisting of four genes, which demonstrated significant prognostic value for PCa patients. Our findings suggest that this signature could serve as a valuable tool for predicting patient outcomes and guiding personalized treatment strategies for PCa.

A novel anoikis‐related prognostic signature associated with prognosis and immune infiltration landscape in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesThe Journal of Gene Medicine, Volume 26, Issue 1, January 2024.
Based on anoikis‐related genes, we developed a risk prediction model to provide individualized and precise treatment for lung adenocarcinoma patients. Patients in different risk groups need to be targeted for treatment. Abstract Background One of the most prevalent malignancies in the world is lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), with a large number of people ...

Molecular mechanisms of mammalian sperm capacitation, and its regulation by sodium‐dependent secondary active transporters

open access: yesReproductive Medicine and Biology, Volume 23, Issue 1, January/December 2024.
Abstract Background Mammalian spermatozoa have to be “capacitated” to be fertilization‐competent. Capacitation is a collective term for the physiological and biochemical changes in spermatozoa that occur within the female body. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying capacitation have not been fully elucidated. Methods Previously published papers

Use of whole-exome sequencing to identify a novel ADCY10 mutation in a patient with nephrolithiasis.

open access: yesAmerican journal of translational research
Nephrolithiasis is a prevalent condition with high morbidity, and the incidence and prevalence of nephrolithiasis have been increasing worldwide. Although dozens of monogenic reason of nephrolithiasis have been identified, the fraction of the disease caused by single genes has not been determined.
