The Photophysics of Nucleic Acids: Consequences for the Emergence of Life
Photochemical reactions in nucleic acids induced by ultraviolet (UV) radiation could have played an important role in the prebiotic selection of the building blocks of life. This Review summarizes the quantum efficiencies of the photorelaxation pathways of nucleic acids and discusses its implications for the emergence of an initial sequence pool on ...

A novel artificial nucleobase, 1‐(3‐(hydroxymethyl)phenyl)‐3‐phenylpropane‐1,3‐dione (HdbmOR), bearing a β‐diketone functionality and designed to form inter‐strand complexes that resemble lanthanoid‐mediated base pairs, was developed. The antenna effect of HdbmOR promoting luminescence of EuIII and SmIII is retained upon incorporation into short ...

Dual control of vascular tone and remodelling by ATP released from nerves and endothelial cells [PDF]
Purinergic signalling is important both in short-term control of vascular tone and in longer-term control of cell proliferation, migration and death involved in vascular remodelling.

Thirty‐three M. hyopneumoniae fusion proteins were expressed in soluble form. Twenty‐one immunodominant proteins were identified, and six discriminating ones reacted with convalescent but not hyperimmune sera were confirmed. The result provides candidate antigens for the exploration of protective antigens.

Flavin nucleotides in human lens: Regional distribution in Brunescent cataracts
The biochemical mechanism(s) underlying brunescent cataracts remain unclear. Oxidative stress due to reactive oxygen species may have a role in the pigmentation process in eye lens.
