HORMONE STUDIES IN A CASE OF ADRENOGENITALISM DUE TO NEOPLASM OF THE ADRENAL CORTEX

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1951
THE occurrence of large amounts of androgen in the urine of humans with adrenogenitalism resulting from adrenal cortical neoplasia is well known (1). Little is known concerning the hormone content of the tumors themselves. Except for the report of Slot (2), who found in the tumor of a patient with adrenogenitalism a “ quantity of male and female ...

CORTIN, VITAL HORMONE OF THE ADRENAL CORTEX*

Endocrinology, 1930
The cortex of the adrenal gland produces a hormone which is essential to life. Without it appetite fails, weight is lost and marked muscular weakness develops ultimately leading to prostration and death. We have already described a method by which a dilute solution of this hormone can be prepared (1).

DIRECT ACTION OF MALE SEX HORMONE ON THE ADRENAL CORTEX1

Endocrinology, 1950
THE interrelationship between the adrenals and the reproductive system has been well studied, experimentally as well as clinically, as regards the influence of the adrenals on the sexual organs. The other aspect of the problem, that is, the effect of the gonads on the adrenals, has not been given as much attention.

DISTRIBUTION OF ADRENOCORTICOTROPHIC HORMONE-STIMULATED ADENYLATE CYCLASE IN THE ADRENAL CORTEX

Journal of Endocrinology, 1973
SUMMARY The intra-adrenal distribution of adenylate cyclase was measured in microsections of guinea-pig and rat adrenals. Addition of α-adrenocorticotrophin-(1–24)-tetracosapeptide (α1–24ACTH) in vitro to sections of normal guinea-pig adrenals stimulated enzyme activity in glomerular—fascicular border zone tissue and reticular tissue.

Male aging and hormones: the adrenal cortex.

Journal of endocrinological investigation, 2005
The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in the aging male (adrenopause) is characterized by an unexplained reduction of DHEA secretion while ACTH and cortisol show no major changes, except for a lower amplitude of 24-h fluctuations and a tendency to higher cortisol values in the evening and night (especially in dementia).

Hormonal Physiology of the Ovary and Adrenal Cortex

1987
The central mission of the ovary is to provide fertilizable ova, but it also has a complicated secondary agenda, made possible by the fact that it secretes steroidal and possibly nonsteroidal hormones: (1) the long-term project, beginning in intrauterine life and extending through puberty, of developing the genital organs and the secondary sex ...

Effect of thyroid hormone on regeneration of the adrenal cortex

Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, 1964
Albino rats, weighing 120–160 g were used. The first group of the animals served as control; the second group received thyroid per os in a dose of 5 mg/10 g body weight; the third group-6 methylthiouracil in a dose of 10 mg. Total excision of the right adrenal gland and extraction of half of the left one was performed in all animals.

The Action of Corticotropic and Adrenal Cortex Hormones on the Mammary Gland

Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 1949
Summary. The action of adrenocorticotrophin and the adrenal cortex hormones on the mammary gland is studied on parabiotic rats. The main findings supporting the view that neither adrenocorticotrophin nor the adrenal cortex hormones are essential for the normal growth and development of the mammary gland are:  In spite of a persistent atrophy of the ...

THE INFLUENCE OF STEROID HORMONES ON THE ENERGY METABOLISM OF THE ADRENAL CORTEX IN VITRO

Journal of Endocrinology, 1954
SUMMARY The action of different steroid hormones on the oxygen consumption of adrenal cortex slices in vitro was investigated. Deoxycorticosterone (DOC), testosterone and dehydroisoandrosterone, and 17-hydroxycorticosterone, were found to stimulate the oxygen uptake rate, while cortisone, progesterone, pregnenolone, androsterone and ...

Hormone-producing tumors of the adrenal cortex

The American Journal of Surgery, 1954
Abstract 1. 1. The present day concepts of the physiologic functions of adrenal cortical hormones are briefly reviewed. 2. 2. Some of the factors concerned with the diagnosis and management of adrenal lesions are discussed. 3. 3. Two cases of hyperfunctioning adrenal cortical adenomas are presented.
