From junk to function — How weak selection in eukaryotes builds new parts and drives genomic complexity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

Approximate Roots and Properties of Differential Equations for Degenerate q-Special Polynomials

open access: yes, 2023
In this paper, we generate new degenerate quantum Euler polynomials (DQE polynomials), which are related to both degenerate Euler polynomials and q-Euler polynomials.

Chiral separation of chloroalkanes with the chromatographic column onboard Martian rovers

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Computer image of the Rosalind Franklin Rover of ESA's ExoMars mission. ExoMars is scheduled to land on planet Mars in Oxia Planum in 2029. This area represents an interesting spot to look for biosignatures. Investigations of ExoMars include measurement on molecular chirality. We show that chiral chloroalkanes, that have been identified on Mars, can be

EXISTENCE OF SOLUTIONS FOR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH ADVANCED ARGUMENT

open access: yesDemonstratio Mathematica, 1986
The aim of this work is to give sufficient conditions for existence of solutions of generalized Nicolleti problem for an integro-differential equation with advanced argument. The problem is considered in n- dimensional Euclidean space \(R^ n\). Under conditions of Carathéodory type, using a Schauder-Tikhonov fixed point result, a specified formulation ...

A context‐dependent modulatory role for eIF6 in acquired resistance to vemurafenib in melanoma

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Acquired resistance to vemurafenib upregulates the translation factor eIF6 in melanoma cells. Silencing eIF6 in resistant cells reduces proliferation and partially restores drug sensitivity, whereas its overexpression increases sensitivity across melanoma lines regardless of BRAF status, via modulation of mTOR, S6K, and MAPK signaling.

Smaller is better: nanobodies meet NMR

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nanobodies are single‐domain antigen‐binding fragments derived from camelid heavy chain antibodies. Their small size, high stability, and exceptional specificity make nanobodies uniquely useful probes for NMR studies of protein dynamics, transient conformational states, and protein–protein interactions.

Soft motions encoded by the fold and mediated by conserved hinge sites drive V‐ATPase allosteric machinery and autoinhibition

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Vacuolar H+‐ATPase (V‐ATPase) is a multisubunit rotary proton pump that acidifies intracellular compartments. Using elastic network models, we identified conserved hinge residues that govern its large‐scale functional motions. We show that intrinsically encoded ‘soft modes’ drive critical functional transitions, including rotary catalysis and ...

Oscillations of nonlinear differential equations with several deviating arguments

open access: yesElectronic Journal of Qualitative Theory of Differential Equations, 2018
This article concerns the oscillatory behavior of first-order non-linear differential equations with several variable deviating arguments and non-negative coefficients.

The advancement of oscillation theory of functional differential equations

open access: yesChinese Science Bulletin, 1998
Here, the author reviews the main problems of the oscillation theory for functional-differential equations, including the formulation, a brief survey of the history and open problems in oscillations theory.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...
