Aerodynamic Damping Prediction for Turbomachinery Based on Fluid-Structure Interaction with Modal Excitation

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
Aerodynamic damping predictions are critical when analyzing aeroelastic stability. A novel method has been developed to predict aerodynamic damping by employing two single time-domain simulations, specifically, one with the blade impulsed naturally in a ...

Simulations of Aerodynamic Damping for MEMS Resonators

open access: yes39th AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference, 2009
Aerodynamic damping for MEMS resonators is studied based on the numerical solution of Boltzmann-ESBGK equation. A compact model is then developed based on numerical simulations for a wide range of Knudsen numbers. The damping predictions are compared with both Reynold equation based models and several sets of experimental data.

Aerodynamic damping of membranes in still air [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The aerodynamic mechanisms modifying the dynamic response of membrane structures oscillating in still air are discussed. Emphasis is placed on aerodynamic damping and its connection to vortex shedding from the membrane edges. A simplified vortex-particle method for the prediction of aerodynamic damping and added mass for two-dimensional configurations ...

Determination of Aerodynamic Damping at High Reduced Frequencies

open access: yesVolume 7C: Structures and Dynamics, 2018
In turbomachines, forced response of blades is blade vibrations due to external aerodynamic excitations and it can lead to blade failures which can have fatal or severe economic consequences. The estimation of the level of vibration due to forced response is dependent on the determination of aerodynamic damping.

Experimental and numerical investigation of aerodynamic damping

open access: yes, 2023
This thesis introduces a new aeromechanical test facility for axial compressor rotors called ACTIVE (Axial Compressor Test rig for the Investigation of blisk Vibrations with an active Excitation system). Thanks to the closed loop design, the test facility can be operated at variable pressure levels as well as at vacuum without changing the test setup ...

Aerodynamic damping of telecommunication lattice towers

open access: yes, 2019
Lattice towers are structures generally considered to be sensitive to wind loading, mainly due to their low mass. However, low mass structures possess considerable aerodynamic damping which has a reduction effect on the along-wind induced dynamic response.

AERODYNAMIC DAMPING PREDICTIONS DURING COMPRESSOR SURGE: A NUMERICAL COMPARISON BETWEEN A HALF AND FULL TRANSIENT APPROACH [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
The prediction of the aerodynamic damping during compressor surge is a challenging task, because the flow is continuously evolving along the four surge cycle phases: Pressurization (PR), Flow-Breakdown (FB), Reversed Flow (RF) and Regeneration (RG) and ...

Aerodynamic Damping in Turbomachinery [PDF]

open access: yesASME 1972 International Gas Turbine and Fluids Engineering Conference and Products Show, 1972
An experimental study of aerodynamic damping has been carried out on an axial compressor in which stagger angle, pressure ratio, and relative velocity was varied. The study utilized explosive charges buried in the tip of the blade to provide excitation and found the damping by measuring the log decrement of the vibrations.

Modelling and Simulation of Aerodynamic Cylindrical Bearings Using ANSYS Hydrodynamic Bearing Element Types

open access: yesVehicles, 2023
Modern power engine concepts and environmental restrictions demand oil-free lubrication of rotors, for example, by gas bearings. However, the stiffness and damping properties ruling the rotor’s dynamics are poorly documented for aerodynamic bearings and ...
