A bioinspired Separated Flow wing provides turbulence resilience and aerodynamic efficiency for miniature drones

open access: yesScience Robotics, 2020
A bioinspired wing generates lift that is robust to gusts and freestream turbulence without sacrificing flight duration. Small-scale drones have enough sensing and computing power to find use across a growing number of applications.

Aerodynamics-assisted, efficient and scalable kirigami fog collectors [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
AbstractTo address the global water shortage crisis, one of the promising solutions is to collect freshwater from the environmental resources such as fog. However, the efficiency of conventional fog collectors remains low due to the viscous drag of fog-laden wind deflected around the collecting surface.

Effect of Wing Corrugation on the Aerodynamic Efficiency of Two-Dimensional Flapping Wings

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2020
Many previous studies have shown that wing corrugation of an insect wing is only structurally beneficial in enhancing the wing’s bending stiffness and does not much help to improve the aerodynamic performance of flapping wings.

ON THE IMPACT OF FLIGHT SAFETY CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ON THE AERODYNAMIC EFFICIENCY OF COMMERCIAL AIRPLANES

open access: yesНаучный вестник МГТУ ГА, 2018
The article considers the issue of aerodynamics efficiency implementation taking into account certification requirements for flight safety. Aerodynamics efficiency means high aerodynamic performance (depending on the airplane size), aerodynamic ...

Investigating the impact of velocity fluctuations and compressibility to aerodynamic efficiency of a fixed-wing aircraft

open access: yes, 2020
Steady airflow over the wing of an aircraft in-flight is critical to achieving maximum aerodynamic performance. However, commercial flight routes are most times characterized by fluctuations in the airflow properties. The unsteadiness in the air velocity

Enhanced data efficiency using deep neural networks and Gaussian processes for aerodynamic design optimization [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
Adjoint-based optimization methods are attractive for aerodynamic shape design primarily due to their computational costs being independent of the dimensionality of the input space and their ability to generate high-fidelity gradients that can then be ...

CFD Investigation of Dual Synthetic Jets on an Optimized Aerofoil's Trailing Edge [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Applied Fluid Mechanics
In fluid dynamics, a flow control device is used to control, manage, or modify the behavior of a fluid flow. Jet actuators work by releasing high-velocity jets of fluid, usually air or gas, into the surrounding environment to control or manipulate the ...

Definition and discussion of the intrinsic efficiency of winglets [PDF]

open access: yesINCAS Bulletin, 2018
Three simple equations are derived to define the “Intrinsic Aerodynamic Efficiency of Winglets” independent of the horizontal extension of the winglet and independent of the winglet’s (relative) height.

Effect rules of aft propeller pitch angle on the performance of contra rotation propeller

open access: yesHangkong gongcheng jinzhan, 2023
The pitch angle of the contra rotation propeller (CRP) has important effect on the aerodynamic interference between the front and aft blades, which can change the aerodynamic performance of the propeller.

Flight Test Maneuvers for Efficient Aerodynamic Modeling [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Aircraft, 2011
Novel flight test maneuvers for efficient aerodynamic modeling were developed and demonstrated in flight. Orthogonal optimized multi-sine inputs were applied to aircraft control surfaces to excite aircraft dynamic response in all six degrees of freedom simultaneously while keeping the aircraft close to chosen reference flight conditions.
