Die Einstufung der AfD als Verdachtsfall wurde am 3. März 2021 vom Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz intern in einer Videokonferenz mitgeteilt. Am 5. März - also zwei Tage später - wurde dem Bundesamt aber vom Verwaltungsgericht Köln (VG Köln) aufgrund eines Eilantrags der AfD die Einstufung der Partei als Verdachtsfall untersagt.
