Participatory Budgeting and the Radical Imagination: In Europe but not in Canada?

open access: yes, 2010
Participatory budgets are recent interventions that have sought to counter neoliberalism in the global south and north. I critically assess the claim that they constitute new democratic spaces in which marginal and poor citizens create practices of self ...

Versatile vector tools for efficient protein screening across multiple expression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
A unified vector toolkit enables rapid protein expression screening across E. coli, insect, and mammalian cells. A single primer pair amplifies the target gene, which is inserted into any vector via a standardized interface. This streamlined workflow eliminates repeated cloning steps, accelerating the identification of optimal expression conditions for

Density-functional calculations of molecular electron affinities

open access: yesJournal of the Brazilian Chemical Society, 1999
Electron affinities of twelve small molecules were calculated by density functional theory using two different functionals(B88-P86 and B3LYP) combined with three different basis sets(6-31++G** ; 6-311++G** ; aug-cc-pVTZ).

The Affinity Advantage

open access: yesJournal of Medicinal Chemistry
Drug discovery is a complex, multi-parameter optimization process. I argue that a greater emphasis on optimizing binding affinity will accelerate the development of new medicines. Note that “optimizing” is not always synonymous with “maximizing.” While affinity is certainly not the only thing that matters, the value of optimizing drug – receptor ...

Cyclic azapeptide CD36 ligand attenuates cardiac injury and reduces long‐chain fatty acid accumulation after myocardial ischemia–reperfusion in mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In a murine model of myocardial ischemia and reperfusion (MI/R), the CD36 azapeptide ligand MPE‐298 reduces cardiac injury and transiently lowers left ventricular long‐chain fatty acids (LCFAs) accumulation 3 h after reperfusion, accompanied by a decrease of oxidative stress and inflammation‐associated genes' expression in the heart and adipose tissue.

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

The crystal structure of the Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase BBE22 resolves a long‐standing annotation error

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The crystal structure of Borrelia burgdorferi nicotinamidase (PncA/BBE22) reveals the correct full‐length protein initiated from a non‐canonical AUU start codon. The structure validates previous biochemical findings and resolves a long‐standing annotation error, demonstrating that the truncated database sequence is structurally incompatible with the ...
