A spatial dynamic multistock production model

open access: yes, 1999
We developed a generalized spatial dynamic age-structured multistock production model by linking bioenergetic principles of physiology, population ecology, and community trophodynamics to a two-dimensional finite-element hydrodynamic circulation model ...

Retirement and Home Production: A Regression Discontinuity Approach [PDF]

open access: yes
Existing studies show that individuals who retire replace some private consumption by home production, but do not consider joint behaviour of couples.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Derivation and characterization of retinal pigment epithelium from urine‐derived iPSCs

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Age‐related macular degeneration causes vision loss via RPE dysfunction and loss. Traditional iPSC therapies rely on invasive biopsies, limiting scalability. Here, we utilize urine‐derived stem cells as an accessible source to generate u‐iPSCs, successfully differentiated into pigmented RPE. This “Urine‐to‐Retina” platform provides a promising path for

Determinants of cabbage production among smallholder farmers: a case of Omusati Region, North-Central Namibia

open access: yesDiscover Agriculture
Cabbage production is a key livelihood activity for smallholder farmers in Namibia, contributing to household income, nutrition, and food security. However, its productivity is constrained by multiple, unknown factors.

Bayesian geo-additive modeling of zonal level crop production in Ethiopia

open access: yesScientific African
Crop production plays an important role in global food security, economic stability, and sustainable development, so it is important to identify covariates that linearly and nonlinearly affect it to ensure sustainable food security and economic stability.

Acute caffeine treatment protects the developing retina from ischemia‐induced cell death

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Caffeine reduces cell death in the developing retina under ischemia (OGD). This effect does not involve BDNF upregulation or antioxidant pathways (NRF2/VEGF). Neuroprotection occurs mainly through adenosine A2A receptor antagonism, decreasing glutamate release and excitotoxicity, highlighting caffeine's potential as an acute neuroprotective agent in ...

Does Age Structure Forecast Economic Growth? [PDF]

open access: yes
Increases in the proportion of the working age population can yield a "demographic dividend" that enhances the rate of economic growth. We estimate the parameters of an economic growth model with a cross section of countries over the period 1960 to 1980 ...
