[Endocrine responses to insulin and gestational age in the calf].

open access: yesReproduction, nutrition, developpement, 1985
The influence of hypoglycemia on pituitary and cortical and medullary adrenal response was studied in Holstein X Friesian male calves by giving an intravenous injection of bovine insulin (0.2 U/kg b.w.). Seventeen (9 treated and 8 control) calves were born spontaneously at term (278 days) and 9 (5 treated and 4 control) were delivered by caesarean ...

Dielectric Elastomer Actuators as Safe and Effective Tools for Mechanostimulation of Human Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Replicating physiological forces is crucial for realistic cell models. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) offer a soft alternative, though their high voltages raised toxicity concerns. We demonstrate that DEA stimulation causes no cell damage, cell death or cell‐cycle disruption, while activating mechanosensitive responses.

Accounting for animal health in efficiency analysis: An application to Swedish dairy farms

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Poor animal health is a central concern in modern livestock production. Despite the necessity to incorporate animal health in efficiency analysis, the theoretical and empirical developments are limited on this subject. This article appropriately characterizes the axiomatic properties of animal health within a production framework.

Lymphatic Abnormalities in Noonan Syndrome Extend Beyond Clinically Apparent Disease

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Medical Genetics Part A, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Lymphatic disease represents a well‐described manifestation of Noonan syndrome (NS), yet the full phenotypic spectrum remains incompletely characterized, especially in asymptomatic individuals. We conducted a cross‐sectional study including 10 individuals with NS (four with peripheral lymphedema and six without) and 10 age‐ and sex‐matched ...

A simple medical device development according to normative values of calf circumference across ages: results from the Italian Longevity Check‐up 7+ (Lookup 7+) project

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle
Background Wide consensus exists on the notion that low muscle mass is a predictor of negative health‐related events, such as disability, morbidity, and mortality.

Measurement of the Calf Muscle Circumference is Useful for Diagnosing Sarcopenia in Older Adults Requiring Long-Term Care [PDF]

open access: yesAnnals of Geriatric Medicine and Research
Background Calf muscle circumference is a potential alternative for measuring skeletal muscle mass. However, the association between calf muscle circumference and sarcopenia and the reliability of sarcopenia diagnosis based on calf muscle circumference ...
