Star formation history of the Galactic bulge from deep HST imaging of low reddening windows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Despite the huge amount of photometric and spectroscopic efforts targetting the Galactic bulge over the past few years, its age distribution remains controversial owing to both the complexity of determining the age of individual stars and the difficult observing conditions.

B cell mechanobiology in health and disease: emerging techniques and insights into therapeutic responses

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
B cells sense external mechanical forces and convert them into biochemical signals through mechanotransduction. Understanding how malignant B cells respond to physical stimuli represents a groundbreaking area of research. This review examines the key mechano‐related molecules and pathways in B lymphocytes, highlights the most relevant techniques to ...

Perception of the quality of life of caregivers of octogenarians [PDF]

open access: yesRev Rene, 2013
The objective of the study was to investigate the perception that caregivers of octogenarians have regarding the quality of life and aspects of life that are more harmful to this quality. A cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study conducted in

The AgeGuess database: an open online resource on chronological and perceived ages of people aged 3-100 [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
In many developed countries, human life expectancy has doubled over the last 180 years from ~40 to ~80 years. Underlying this great advance is a change in how we age, yet our understanding of this change remains limited. Here we present a unique database rich with possibilities to study the human ageing process: the AgeGuess.org database on people's ...

UBV(RI)_C photometry of the open clusters Be 15, Be 80, and NGC 2192 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
The three open clusters Be 15, Be 80, and NGC 2192 have been observed using CCD UBV(RI)_C photometry at the San Pedro M\'artir Observatory, M\'exico within the framework of our open-cluster survey. The fundamental parameters of interstellar reddening, distance, and age have been derived, and also the metallicity for NGC 2192 (solar metallicity has been

A coiled‐coil domain triggers oligomerization of MmpL10, the mycobacterial transporter of trehalose polyphleate precursor

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Most MmpLs transport lipids and glycolipids of the complex mycomembrane of mycobacteria. This study shows that MmpL10 from Mycobacterium smegmatis, the transporter of the trehalose polyphosphate precursor, harbors a coiled‐coil‐like extension. Biochemical and electron microscopy studies demonstrate that the coiled‐coil enables MmpL10 to trimerize.

Unlocking the potential of tumor‐derived DNA in urine for cancer detection: methodological challenges and opportunities

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urine is a rich source of biomarkers for cancer detection. Tumor‐derived material is released into the bloodstream and transported to the urine. Urine can easily be collected from individuals, allowing non‐invasive cancer detection. This review discusses the rationale behind urine‐based cancer detection and its potential for cancer diagnostics ...

A systematic review of the intervention components, adherence and outcomes of enhanced recovery programmes in older patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery

open access: yesBMC Geriatrics, 2019
Background Enhanced recovery programmes (ERPs) aim to attenuate the surgical stress response and accelerate recovery after surgery, but are not specifically designed for older patients.
