Biosurfactant production by Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from mining waste: From genomic analysis to development of a polymeric composite for removal of hexavalent chromium

open access: yesPolymer International, EarlyView.
Biosurfactant was produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa using andiroba waste from Amazonia. A biosurfactant–alginate composite (Alg/BioS) was successfully synthesized via ionotropic gelation, and achieved up to 70% Cr6+ removal from water. Abstract Environmental contamination by heavy metals represents a significant challenge due to their persistence in ...

Nutritional properties, traditional uses and potential new applications for the sotol plant (Asparagaceae, Convallarioideae): A review

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Sotol (Dasylirion spp.) is a resilient desert plant that sustains ecosystems, cultures and livelihoods in Chihuahua Desert. Our review highlights its nutritional properties, traditional uses and potential new applications in food, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy and water remediation. By synthesizing evidence across disciplines, we show how sotol can

How does leaf age affect performance? A comparative study of essential oils from young and mature Eucalyptus globulus leaves in crop protection

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Leaf age influences metabolomic profiling but not bioactivity of Eucalyptus globulus essential oils. Leaf age affects volatile levels of young and adult E. globulus oils, but not their bioactivity. Young leaf essential oil had higher contents of α‐ and β‐pinene. AEEO had higher levels of 1,8‐cineole and trans‐pinocarveol.

The Neuroprotective Effect of a Waste Byproduct Obtained From Pomegranate (Punica granatum)

open access: yesPhytotherapy Research, EarlyView.
The Effect of a Waste Byproduct Obtained From Pomegranate on Neurodegeneration. ABSTRACT Pomegranate is an exceptional fruit that can have several beneficial effects on human health. The peel of pomegranate, a waste product, should be recovered as it still contains valuable constituents, including phenolic compounds, minerals and fibre. The recovery of

Almond Shell‐Derived Cellulosic Microfibres: Extraction, Characterisation and Applications in Sustainable Paper‐Based Packaging

open access: yesPackaging Technology and Science, EarlyView.
Cellulosic microfibres were extracted from almond shells using organosolv, soda and kraft processes, and comprehensive physicochemical, surface, thermal and morphological characterisation demonstrated their strong potential as sustainable fillers for paper‐based packaging application. ABSTRACT This study develops pathways for the valorisation of almond
