The NPY/AgRP neuron and energy homeostasis

International Journal of Obesity, 2001
Kennedy hypothesized nearly 50 y ago that negative feedback regulation of body fat stores involves hormones that circulate in proportion to adiposity and enter the brain, where they exert inhibitory effects on food intake and energy balance. Recent studies implicate leptin and insulin as 'adiposity signals' to the brain that promote negative energy ...

Cannabinoids drive feeding through AgRP neurons

Brain Research
The endocannabinoid system regulates energy balance and feeding behavior, primarily through cannabinoid type-1 receptors (CB1Rs). While CB1R activation is known to increase food intake, the role of agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons of the arcuate nucleus (ARC) in this process remains unclear.

Serum agouti-related protein (AgRP) levels in bipolar disorder: Could AgRP be a state marker for mania?

Psychiatry Research, 2018
Orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides, especially agouti-related protein (AgRP) and leptin, play important roles in the regulation of energy homeostasis in bipolar disorder. AgRP regulates energy metabolism by increasing appetite and decreasing energy expenditure.

AgRP Neurons Encode Circadian Feeding Time

Physiology
Food intake follows a predictable daily pattern and synchronizes metabolic rhythms. Neurons expressing Agouti-related protein (AgRP) read out physiological energetic state and elicit feeding, but the regulation of these neurons across daily timescales is poorly understood.

mTORC1 signaling in Agrp neurons mediates circadian expression of Agrp and NPY but is dispensable for regulation of feeding behavior

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2015
Orexigenic agouti-related protein/neuropeptide Y (Agrp/NPY) neurons and an orexigenic pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons of the hypothalamus regulate feeding behavior and energy homeostasis. An understanding of the molecular signaling pathways that regulate Agrp/NPY and POMC function could lead to novel treatments for metabolic disorders.

The Neuroendocrine Circuitry Controlled by POMC, MSH, and AGRP

2011
Obesity is one of the most challenging health problems worldwide. Over the past few decades, our knowledge concerning mechanisms of weight regulation has increased tremendously leading to the identification of the leptin-melanocortin pathway. The filling level of energy stores is signaled to the brain, and the information is integrated by hypothalamic ...
