Air Bag Effectiveness as Function of Impact Speed

Traffic Injury Prevention, 2003
An investigation was conducted to estimate the effectiveness of air bags as a function of velocity. The study consisted of three parts: a theoretical idealization, an analysis of National Automotive Sampling System/Crashworthiness Data System (NASS/CDS), and a reanalysis of previously published Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data.

Speed and the Economics of Air Transport

The Journal of the Royal Aeronautical Society, 1934
No one denies that speed is an essential to air travel. It seemed curious to me that air liners were operating at speeds varying from 100 to 150 miles an hour, and some months ago I set out to find a logical basis for determining the most economical speed of flight.

The Measurement of Air Speed in Flight

Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences, 1937
T measurement of air speed of airplanes by means of instruments attached to them is often very inaccurate. The sources of error are numerous and not all of them are easily avoided. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the results of experience gained in numerous flight tests conducted at the laboratory of the N.A.C.A. at Langley Field.

Waves and Speed of Sound in the Air

2011
Sound is a wave that travels in an elastic medium. In particular, sound in the air, such as musical tones, speech, or bird-song, is a longitudinal wave in which change in the local density of the air is propagated. Sound waves in the air can be characterized by sound pressure or particle velocity due to the dilation or condensation of a local area of ...

A New High Speed Air Circuit Breaker

Transactions of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1934
The range of the high speed air circuit breaker has been extended to a 10,000-amp 750-volt d-c continuous rating. It is particularly adaptable to railway systems, and in this larger rating, a single unit has ample capacity for the largest size conversion units now available for 600-volt service. A description of the new circuit breaker is given in this
