Geographic Differences in Availability and Access to Care Services for Asthma and COPD: Case Study of Vancouver Coastal Health, British Columbia

open access: yesCanadian Respiratory Journal
Conclusion: Our findings suggest rural VCH communities have lower access to asthma and COPD care services and the limited urban care services were insufficient to make up for this difference.

Machine Learning‐Enabled Polymer Discovery for Enhanced Pulmonary siRNA Delivery

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study provides an efficient approach to train a machine learning model by merging heterogeneous literature data to predict suitable polymers for siRNA delivery. Without the need for extensive laboratory synthesis, the machine learning enabled a virtual screening and successfully predicted a polymer that is validated for effective gene silencing in

Upper Airway Control in Airway Defense [PDF]

open access: yesActa Medica Martiniana, 2016
Abstract Upper airways (UA) are an organic component of the respiratory tract, they serve to respiration, respiratory tract protection and defense, phonation, deglutition, etc. The functions of UA are regulated by motor control of the oral, pharyngeal, and laryngeal muscles.

Role of inflammatory cells in airway remodeling in COPD

open access: yesInternational Journal of COPD, 2018
COPD is characterized by chronic bronchitis, chronic airway obstruction, and emphysema, leading to a progressive and irreversible decline in lung function. Inflammation is central for the development of COPD.

An Optoelectrically Switched, Dual‐Mode Neuromorphic Sensor for Transient and Accumulative Gas Detection

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A transistor‐type carbon nanotube gas sensor with dual‐mode detection capability has been proposed. By simply adjusting the gate voltage and UV illumination, this sensor enables both real‐time detection and accumulation‐based sensing of toxic gases within a single device, providing a compact and adaptable platform for environmental monitoring ...

Dexamethasone Delivery via Amphiphilic, Low‐swelling Hydrogels Treats Postoperative Inflammation in Cervical Spine Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 14, Issue 7, March 14, 2025.
DexaPatch, an implantable, low‐swelling amphiphilic hydrogel system containing dexamethasone‐PLGA microparticles, is developed and characterized for sustained local steroid release to reduce postoperative inflammation in tight surgical spaces. DexaPatch significantly reduces postoperative edema and fibrosis in a rabbit model of anterior spinal surgery,

Airway remodeling in asthma: what really matters

open access: yesCell and Tissue Research, 2017
Airway remodeling is generally quite broadly defined as any change in composition, distribution, thickness, mass or volume and/or number of structural components observed in the airway wall of patients relative to healthy individuals.

A Multimodal Humidity Adaptive Optical Neuron Based on a MoWS2/VOx Heterojunction for Vision and Respiratory Functions

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A multifunctional memristor is demonstrated for in‐memory sensing and computing, leveraging a MoWS₂/VOx heterojunction to enable high ON/OFF ratio up to 10⁸ with ultralow operating voltages of ±0.2 V. This bio‐inspired multimodal design exhibits tunable synaptic behavior across electrical, optical, and humidity stimuli, enabling in situ modulation of ...

Multi‐Mode Mechanochromic Responses from Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomer Tubes of Uniform Sheath

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The structural‐colored tube is created from cholesteric liquid crystal elastomers, exhibiting uniform color changes with high strain sensitivity upon extension and inflation. The color change occurs across multiple mechanochromic modes, highlighting the influence of molecular anisotropy and tubular geometry on strain sensitivity.

Diagnostic Errors in Initial Misdiagnosis of Foreign Body Aspiration in Children: A Retrospective Observational Study in a Tertiary Care Hospital in China

open access: yesFrontiers in Pediatrics, 2021
Background: Foreign body aspiration (FBA) in children is a common emergency that can easily be missed, leading to delays in treatment. Few large cohort studies have focused on errors in diagnostic assessment. The main purpose of this study was to analyze
