Erosion of heat-treated AISI 4140 steel

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1993
Solid-particle erosion was studied on AISI 4140 steel heat treated to have a Vickers hardness (Hv) of 288–650 kg mm−2. The experiments were conducted in vacuum with 143 μm Al2O3 abrasive impacting at 50–100 m s−1 at an angle of 30° or 90°. Erosion rates were nearly independent of hardness for Hv ⩽ 365 kg mm−2, but increased with hardness for Hv > 365 ...

AISI 4140

Alloy Digest, 1988
Abstract AISI 4140 is a through-hardening chromium-molybdenum medium carbon steel. It is not subject to temper embrittlement. It is recommended for heavy duty service. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, hardness, elasticity, and tensile properties as well as fracture toughness.

Corrosion Behaviour of Electron Beam Welded AISI 304 and AISI 4140

Advanced Materials Research, 2011
In the present work hot corrosion studies were carried out on electron beam welded AISI 304 and AISI 4140 dissimilar weldment in molten salt (K2SO4-60% NaCl) environment at 800 °C for 50 cycles. The weight gain follows parabolic law in all the cases. It is observed that the scale formation was maximum on 4140 side as compared on 304 side.

Hydrogen diffusion through copper-plated AISI 4140 steels

Corrosion Science, 1992
Abstract In order to control the hydrogen embrittlement problems of high strength steels, electrochemical hydrogen permeation experiments were performed on copper-plated AISI 4140 steels to evaluate the beneficial effect of an impermeable coating. Copper plating led to a lower hydrogen permeation rate and effective diffusivity due to its low hydrogen

Microstructure-Sensitive Fatigue Modeling of AISI 4140 Steel

Journal of Engineering Materials and Technology, 2014
A microstructure-based fatigue model is employed to predict fatigue damage in 4140 steel. Fully reversed, strain control fatigue tests were conducted at various strain amplitudes and scanning electron microscopy was employed to establish structure-property relations between the microstructure and cyclic damage.

Tribological Characteristics of Duplex Treated AISI 4140 Steel

2000
In the present study samples of AISI 4140 steel pre-treated by plasma nitriding and coated by a hydrogen-free hard carbon film were investigated with respect to microhardness, surface roughness, residual stress, scratch adhesion and dry sliding wear resistance.

Plasma post oxidation of nitrocarburized AISI 4140 steel

Rare Metals, 2006
Abstract Plasma nitrocarburizing and plasma oxidizing treatments were performed to improve the wear and corrosion resistance of AISI 4140 steel. Plasma nitrocarburizing was conducted for 3 h at 570 °C in the nitrogen, hydrogen and methane atmosphere to produce the ɛ-Fe 2–3 (N, C) phase.

Selective laser melting of AISI 4140 steel

This thesis focused on investigating the microstructure and mechanical properties of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) manufactured AISI 4140 steel under a range of in-situ heat loading conditions. In the SLM process, the process parameters determine the basic performance and microstructure of an as-built object.
