An Atomic‐Scale View at γ’‐Fe4N as Hydrogen Barrier Material

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 12, Issue 13, July 14, 2025.
This study demonstrates the efficacy of γ’‐Fe4N nitride layers, formed via gas nitriding, as hydrogen permeation barriers. Advanced characterization, hydrogen permeation analysis, and DFT calculations reveal a 20 fold reduction in hydrogen diffusion at room temperature.

Mechanical properties and kinetics of boride layers on AISI D2 steel produced by plasma paste boriding

open access: yes, 2021
In the present study, the AISI D2 steel has been treated by the plasma paste boriding process using a gas mixture of 70% H2-30% Ar with 70% of borax and 30% SiC. The boriding treatment has been carried out at 700, 750 and 800 °C for an exposure time of 3

High-Strength D2 tool steel via material extrusion additive manufacturing and post-heat treatment

open access: yesMaterials & Design
AISI D2 tool steel was fabricated using metal-materials extrusion additive manufacturing (M−MEX), followed by heat treatment to optimize its microstructure and mechanical properties. These were compared with conventional wrought D2 materials.

Formation of a Nanostructured Ti‐Si‐C‐N Coating by Self‐Organization with Reduced Amorphous Matrix

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, Volume 12, Issue 5, March 3, 2025.
TiSiCN coatings are deposited by PECVD technique to investigate its micro‐ and nanostructure as well as its mechanical and thermal properties. Instead of a nanocomposite structure consisting of randomly oriented nc‐grains surrounded by an aa‐matrix, these TiSiCN coatings show much larger grains with (200) orientation.

Effect of Post-Heat Treatment on the AISI M4 Layer Deposited by Directed Energy Deposition

open access: yesMetals, 2020
Currently, high-speed steel (HSS) powders are deposited locally on a metal surface through direct energy deposition (DED) onto hardface tool steel. Although the HSS powder enhances the hardness and the abrasion resistance of a metal surface, it makes the

Growth kinetics and wear resistance of vanadium carbide on AISI D2 steel produced by TRD process

open access: yesMaterials Research Express, 2021
Vanadium carbide coating was obtained on the surface of AISI D2 steel by thermal reactive diffusion process using molten borax as based salt and vanadium pentoxide as vanadium donor. The process was performed at 900 °C, 940 °C, 980 °C and 1020 °C for 3 h,

Influence of Metal Surface Structures on Composite Formation during Polymer–Metal Joining Based on Reactive Al/Ni Multilayer Foil

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 3, February 2025.
During hybrid thermoplast metal joining with reacting Al/Ni foils, the structured metal surface influences crack initiation within the multilayer. Molten plastic penetrates the foil interface and forms an overall composite after cooling and resolidification.

Rapid machining of hardened AISI H13 and D2 moulds dies and press tools

open access: yes, 2003
Tools and dies for the forging, die casting and plastics moulding industries are commonly made from AISI H13, heat treated to 48-52 HRC, while the press tool sector predominantly uses AISI D2 at a significantly higher hardness of 60-62 HRC. Over the last
