Brief communication: Accuracy of the fallen blocks volume-frequency law [PDF]

open access: yesNatural Hazards and Earth System Sciences, 2017
De Biagi et al. (2017) have proposed a procedure for building a fallen block volume-frequency law for rockfall phenomenon. The input data are from both the recording of rockfall events and from the survey of fallen block volumes.

Achieving robustness to aleatoric uncertainty with heteroscedastic Bayesian optimisation

open access: yesMachine Learning: Science and Technology, 2021
Abstract Bayesian optimisation is a sample-efficient search methodology that holds great promise for accelerating drug and materials discovery programs. A frequently-overlooked modelling consideration in Bayesian optimisation strategies however, is the representation of heteroscedastic aleatoric uncertainty.

Seismic Fragility Analysis of Containment Structures in Nuclear Power Plants Considering Alkali‐Silica Reaction

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 55, Issue 6, Page 1467-1487, May 2026.
ABSTRACT This study quantifies the influence of alkali‐silica reaction (ASR) on the seismic fragility of prestressed concrete containment structures in nuclear power plants (NPPs). Global collapse was considered as the governing failure mode to maintain consistency with current risk assessment frameworks, and was captured using a finite element model ...

Why Autonomous Vehicles Are Not Ready Yet: A Multi‐Disciplinary Review of Problems, Attempted Solutions, and Future Directions

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, Volume 43, Issue 3, Page 2254-2341, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Personal autonomous vehicles can sense their surrounding environment, plan their route, and drive with little or no involvement of human drivers. Despite the latest technological advancements and the hopeful announcements made by leading entrepreneurs, to date no personal vehicle is approved for road circulation in a “fully” or “semi ...

Uncertainty Calibration in Molecular Machine Learning: Comparing Evidential and Ensemble Approaches

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, Volume 32, Issue 15, 22 April 2026.
Raw uncertainty estimates from deep evidential regression and deep ensembles are systematically miscalibrated. Post hoc calibration aligns predicted uncertainty with true errors, improving reliability and enabling efficient active learning and reducing computational cost while preserving predictive accuracy.

Machine Learning for Designing Perovskites and Perovskite‐Inspired Solar Materials: Emerging Opportunities and Challenges

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 23, 23 April 2026.
This review offers a comprehensive comparison between perovskites and perovskite‐inspired materials (PIMs), focusing on their crystal structures, electronic properties, and chemical compositions. It evaluates the applicability of machine learning (ML) descriptors and models across both material classes.
