Laboratory measurements of the physics of auroral electron acceleration by Alfvén waves [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
It was predicted that Alfvén waves can account for the acceleration of precipitating auroral electrons. Here, the authors show laboratory measurements of the resonant transfer of energy from Alfvén waves to electrons under conditions relevant to the ...

Elastic Alfven waves in elastic turbulence [PDF]

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
An analog of Alfven waves in plasma with velocity set by magnetic tension has been predicted to appear in elastic turbulence. Here the authors observe elastic Alfven waves in elastic turbulence of polymer solution flow between two obstacles where the ...

Non-Linear Damping of Surface Alfvén Waves Due to Uniturbulence

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences, 2022
This investigation is concerned with uniturbulence associated with surface Alfvén waves that exist in a Cartesian equilibrium model with a constant magnetic field and a piece-wise constant density.

Second-order perturbations in Alfvén waves in finite pressure plasma

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics, 2022
It is shown first that in finite pressure plasma, just as in cold plasma, Alfvén waves created by an initial perturbation generate plasma flows and decreases in the magnetic field, which propagate along with these waves.

Alfvén waves in space and astrophysical dusty plasmas [PDF]

open access: yesNonlinear Processes in Geophysics, 2014
In this paper, we present some results of previous works on Alfvén waves in a dusty plasma in different astrophysical and space regions by taking into account the effect of superthermal particles on the dispersive characteristics.

Alfvén wave characteristics of equatorial plasma irregularities in the ionosphere derived from CHAMP observations [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics, 2014
We report magnetic field observations of the components transverse to the main field in the frequency range 1–25 Hz from times of equatorial plasma irregularity crossings. These field variations are interpreted as Alfvénic signatures accompanying intermediate-scale (150 m–4 km) plasma density depletions.

Alfvén Wave Connection between the Chromosphere and the Corona of the Sun: An Analytical Study

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Alfvén waves are closely relevant to the three outstanding problems in the solar corona: coronal heating, solar wind acceleration, and the fractionization of low first ionization potential (FIP) elements.

Alfvén waves: To the 80th anniversary of discovery

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics, 2022
The article is dedicated to the anniversary of the discovery of Alfvén waves. The concept of Alfvén waves has played an outstanding role in the formation and development of cosmic electrodynamics.

Geoeffectiveness of Interplanetary Alfvén Waves. II. Spectral Characteristics and Geomagnetic Responses

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Using multipoint observations over 10 yr near 1 au, we investigate the spectra (5 minutes to 2 hr) of interplanetary Alfvén waves and the responses in the geomagnetic activities.

Non-propagating electric and density structures formed through non-linear interaction of Alfvén waves [PDF]

open access: yesAnnales Geophysicae, 2012
In the auroral zone of the Earth, the electron acceleration by Alfvén waves is sometimes seen as a precursor of the non-propagating acceleration structures.
