Alfven Waves in the Solar Atmosphere

open access: yes, 2012
Alfven waves are considered to be viable transporters of the non-thermal energy required to heat the Sun's quiescent atmosphere. An abundance of recent observations, from state-of-the-art facilities, have reported the existence of Alfven waves in a range of chromospheric and coronal structures.

Modeling the Effects of a Light Bridge on Properties of Magnetohydrodynamic Waves in Solar Pores

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Solar pores are ideal magnetic structures for wave propagation and transport of energy radially outwards across the upper layers of the solar atmosphere.

Interactions of oblique interplanetary discontinuities and their manifestations during STIP intervals 15-19 [PDF]

open access: yes
The generation of slow shock waves as the result of the interaction of Alfven discontinuities with solar wind contact surfaces is considered. The latter are taken to be the boundaries of proton and alpha-particle concentration inhomogeneities.

Solar wind models with Alfven waves

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1978
Solutions to the one-fluid solar-wind equations that include pressure and heating due to outwardly propagating Alfven waves are presented. The solutions are given for two forms of the heat flux: the classical Spitzer (1962) formula and a 'collisional' heat flux. Both high-speed and low-speed solar-wind streams are considered.

MHD WAVES IN THE COLLISIONAL PLASMA OF THE SOLAR CORONA AND TERRESTRIAL IONOSPHERE

open access: yesSolar-Terrestrial Physics, 2020
We have studied MHD waves (Alfvén and fast compressional modes) in a homogeneous collisional three-component low-β plasma. The three-component plasma consists of electrons, ions, and neutrals with arbitrary ratio between collision frequencies and wave ...

One-dimensional Linear Analysis and Numerical Simulations of Alfvén Waves in a Force-free Magnetosphere around a Kerr Black Hole

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We perform 1D linear analysis and numerical simulations of the propagation of Alfvén waves in a force-free magnetosphere along magnetic field lines around a spinning black hole.

Coronal Alfven waves and the solar wind [PDF]

open access: yes
The observed properties of coronal Alfven waves in the solar wind at 1 AU are briefly reviewed, with some theoretical discussion of their probable effects on the dynamics of the expanding solar corona. It is concluded that coronal Alfven waves can have a

Microscale Alfven waves in the solar wind at 1 AU [PDF]

open access: yes
Analysis of IMP 1 (Explorer 43) plasma and magnetic field fluctuations on a scale of one hour revealed that linearly and circularly polarized Alfven waves are rarely present in the solar wind at 1 AU.

Changes in the Plasma Sheet Conditions at Europa's Orbit Retrieved From Lead Angle of the Satellite Auroral Footprints

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
The electromagnetic interaction between Europa and the plasma sheet in the Jovian magnetosphere generates Alfvén waves, ultimately generating auroral footprints in Jupiter's atmosphere.
